Cooper: Don't admit illegal immigrants

Roy Cooper says public colleges in North Carolina should not admit illegal immigrants.

In an advisory letter released Wednesday, the attorney general's office advised the state's 58 community colleges and 16 four-year institutions in the University of North Carolina system to reverse their current policies of allowing illegal immigrants to attend.

It is also a setback to a movement to grant in-state tuition to illegal immigrants who attended high school here.

"It really closes the door of opportunity for a lot of kids," said Andrea Bazan, president of the Triangle Community Foundation.

The state could pass a law allowing students to attend, the letter says, otherwise a policy of prohibiting them would "more likely withstand judicial scrutiny."

The state's universities have admitted illegal immigrants since 2004. (N&O)

Re: Cooper: Don't admit illegal immigrants

Apparently they do have a way to make a living because that is the only reason they are coming to this country. In additiion you should be upset that you are paying taxes to support people that are here illegally, but since you said you do not mind I guess you have plenty of money to go around and if that is the case...can I have some?

Re: Cooper: Don't admit illegal immigrants

Name one person that has not gotten an opportunity at a community college because of an illegal alien....chirp, chirp, chirp, tumbleweed.

They are here, albeit illegally, and until the government startes deporting them, I do not have a problem with them getting educated and becoming a part of our civilized society, instead of living in the shadows as second class human beings. Taxes are the way in which you buy civilization and whether you want to believe it or not, they are part of civilization. My taxes go to fund the school system, guess how many kids I have? ZERO! I am not complaining about my taxes paying for the schools, because I want people to get an education so they aren’t robbing me on the street corner because they do not have a way to make a living.

Re: Cooper: Don't admit illegal immigrants

"I'm just curious about what it is about educating these children that is harmful to any "American" student. I think there's far more harm to the entire community if we have a bunch of kids out on the street with no way of making a living or improving their lot in life. "

Educating them with my taxpaying dollars is harmful to every "American" student as it is taking resources away from them, plus grants a seat to an illegal instead of a citizen. If you read the NC Constitution and the establishment of the Higher Education system, it clearly states that it is for citizens and they are not citizens. Thanks and they should not be on our streets at all...they have not helped pay for them either.

Re: Cooper: Don't admit illegal immigrants

I second that! People can huff and puff all they want but illegal is illegal. What example are we setting for our children when they see the government not enforcing the law and even disobeying the law?

Re: Cooper: Don't admit illegal immigrants

Well done Roy Cooper. The admission of illegals takes away/hinders of a American student. Thanks Mr. Cooper for standing up for what is right.
