JACKSONVILLE – Sen. Hillary Clinton portrayed herself today as the only presidential hopeful who could "responsibly" end the war in Iraq.
Clinton sought to thread a needle between Republican Sen. John McCain's support for continuing U.S. presence and her Democratic rival Sen. Barack Obama's more adamant opposition to the war, reports Rob Christensen.
Clinton said that if she is elected president, she would meet with military leaders to devise a withdrawal plan. She said the U.S. had already provided the Iraqis “the gift of freedom.”
“They will no longer have a blank check from the president of the United States,” Clinton told about 2,000 people who gathered this morning in front of a fire house in this military town near the Camp Lejeune Marine base.
Clinton also promised that her administration would provide more attention to the needs of veterans, and would work to make sure that troops are not overstretched.

This was the third stop on a three city-campaign swing, in which Clinton, accompanied by a bevy of retired generals, courted moderate Democratic voters.
Clinton's words were welcomed by Sonnet Dibb, whose husband is a Marine captain serving in Iraq.
“I want them to come home,” said Dibb, 29, who brought her three children with her to watch Clinton. “I'm afraid the violence will escalate (if the U.S leaves). My husband wants to finish the job they started. But I want them home safe.”
Ken Roe, a 24-year-old Marine, also attended the Clinton rally. But he is supporting McCain.
"I support all the troops over there,” Roe said. “I do think we need a presence in the area. If not, things like 9/11 will happen again. That is why we are still in Okinawa and in Japan.”

Re: Clinton would "responsibly" end war
iwannab4change, I don't think he is a Jihadist, but I do think he is more inclined to support Palestinian and Arab positions than Israel, that he is just saying what he knows he has to say to the pro-Israel forces in the democratic party so he can get elected. Google Ali Abunimah and you will find out a lot about his support for the Palestinians.
I also don't think he is a real Christian in spite of his claim that he prays to Jesus every day. He doesn't believe that Jesus is the way to salvation and said so. He doesn't believe in hell. He said that he wouldn't want his girls "punished" with a baby if they had sex out of wedlock.
If you read what he has said about his faith, It almost seems like he has taken his mother's faith in a power greater than ourselves and named it Jesus, as though all gods were the same god. Here's a good link.
