Clinton: Stop ducking debate

Hillary Clinton's state political director, Ace Smith, has issued a statement on a North Carolina debate.

Last week, Senator Hillary Clinton accepted an invitation to participate in a debate on April 27 sponsored by the North Carolina Democratic Party, CBS News and North Carolina State University.

Today, Senator Barack Obama said that the debate does not fit into his schedule.

Senator Obama should stop ducking a debate and explain to North Carolinians why they don't deserve to hear directly from the candidates.

Re: Clinton: Stop ducking debate

Senator Obama had previously requested that Senator Clinton hold a debate in North Carolina--SHE DECLINED. Now, she accuses him of "ducking" a debate in NC. Shame on you Ms. Clinton. You are our former First Lady--please start acting like a LADY! You are an embarrassment to women. You are mean-spirited, scorned, and vindictive. Did I forget to mention a liar? You owe North Carolina and America an apology. Maybe then, you can repair the damage that you have done to the Clinton name. And Mr. President Clinton, please get out of the mud. You know better! We have supported you for decades when you were in one scandal after another. Please get out of the mud and put your support behind Senator Obama. He is a kind, humble, thoughtful, compassionate, patriotic American and an outstanding example of what our Chief of Staff should be. Thank GOD for Senator Obama!

Local politicians, take note--We're mad as hell, and we are not going to take it anymore. Please endorse Senator Obama, go out and vote NOW, and publicly announce your support for Senator Obama. Let's pull ourselves up by the bootstraps and bring this country together.

Now there's an idea that can keep candidates from ducking the debate: hold the debate in Duck, N.C. Sen. Marc Basnight ought to be able to help arrange that.

Re: Clinton: Stop ducking debate

Ace Smith and his North Carolina campaign staff for Sen. Hillary Clinton certainly are to be commended for getting former President Bill Clinton to spend extensive time and energy in the Old North State stumping for his wife's candidacy.

Bill Clinton has really gotten down to the grass-roots level in his previous visit to Western North Carolina and in this weekend's virtual whistle-stopping tour of Eastern North Carolina. I mean, when's the last time a presidential candidate stopped in Deep Run in Lenoir County?

Next thing you know, one of the presidential campaigns will be trying to book radio time in Chocowinity or Lizard Lick.

In fact, if Bill Clinton doesn't have enough to work on back home in New York State, he should consider hanging out a shingle here in North Carolina because he could just about win a write-in campaign for U.S. senator considering all the cities, towns and rural communities he has personally visited.

A Bill Clinton-Elizabeth Dole senatorial race would be barrels of fun because can you imagine their spouses, Hillary Clinton and Bob Dole, trying to make sure they stay on message?

Meanwhile, Michelle Obama made a fine speech in her appearance at N.C. State in behalf of Sen. Barack Obama's campaign, so between Pennsylvania and North Carolina, there's likely to be a lot of political home-cooking for all interested local Democratic voters in the Quaker and Tar Heel states to sample in the next couple of weeks.
