Butterfield: More endorsements coming

U.S. Rep. G.K. Butterfield of Wilson says he is the only North Carolina congressman supporting Barack Obama, but he expects further endorsements Tuesday or Wednesday.

“There have been substantial discussions between the Obama campaign and the other six (Democrats),” Butterfield said, reports Rob Christensen.

"More than one is seriously considering making a public release this week in support of Senator Obama — more than one but less than six,” he said.

Butterfield would not say who was poised to back Obama. But there has been considerable speculation about U.S. Rep. Mel Watt of Charlotte, the former head of the Congressional Black Caucus.

Butterfield said a report in the Wall Street Journal that all seven North Carolina House Democrats were prepared to back Obama was “not true.”

Butterfield said none of the North Carolina Democratic congressmen appear poised to back New York Sen. Hillary Clinton.
