Republican Sen. Richard Burr said he intends to vote against ratification of the New START nuclear arms treaty between the U.S. and Russia that being pushed by Democratic President Barack Obama.
"I fear it will have negative impact on our national security, and the United States must be assured that any arms treaty it agrees to does not limit our ability to defend against growing international threats," Burr said in a statement.
"This New Start does not satisfy that criteria, and I look forward to debate on the issue so I can address more specifically the concerns I have with ratifying this agreement," Burr said.
Obama is trying to get ratification of the treaty by the lame duck Senate before the end of the year. Ratification requires 67 votes. The treaty would cut the number of missile launchers in half and would create a new regimen of inspections and verification.
The measure has run into opposition from Senate Republicans.
