Burr named to GOP leadership post

Sen. Richard Burr will be chief deputy whip for the GOP.

The Winston-Salem Republican was named to the post by Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona, the Senate Republican whip, overseeing six regional deputy whips from Idaho to Louisiana.

"I couldn't be more enthusiastic about the whip team I've assembled," Kyl said in a statement. "I'm also excited to put Senator Burr's outstanding leadership skills to work as Chief Deputy Whip."

Burr said he was honored to take the post, which will involve ensuring that senators show up for important votes and is a top leadership role for the Republican minority.

"From health care, to education, to getting our economy back on the right track, the votes in the Senate touch on so many important topics, and I look forward to helping articulate our caucus' solutions to the many issues we face," Burr said in a statement.

Re: Burr named to GOP leadership post

One difference: Dole's post was about campaigning, while Burr's is about work in Congress.

I hope this is not the kiss of death. A leadership position did wonders for former Sen. Dole.
