Burr: Mistake to release memos

U.S. Sen. Richard Burr said he is disappointed that President Obama released memos from the Bush administration.

In an e-mail to Dome, the Winston-Salem Republican said that making public the memos from the Office of Legal Counsel supporting the brutal interrogation methods used by the CIA could hurt the troops and help terrorists.

"I am disappointed that the Administration chose, over the objections of some of our most respected intelligence experts, to selectively release for seemingly political purposes, highly classified OLC memos detailing the legal analysis relating to the CIA’s sensitive interrogation techniques," he said.

He also said that the torture methods outlined in a recent Senate Armed Services Committee report were "shocking," but they would not happen again.

"The unfortunate incidents outlined in the recently released Armed Services Committee report that occurred at some of our nation’s detention facilities were shocking and damaged our reputation in the global community, but measures have been taken to prevent occurrences like this from happening in the future," he said.

Previously: Sen. Kay Hagan 'deeply concerned' by report.

Re: What Liberals Don't Understand

"What Liberals don't understand?"

They just cannot understand that even though daddy and granddaddy left them all that money, other people have to work for a living. They just can't understand the old concept of those who do not work do not get to share in the fruits of other's labor. I believe this concept may be found in the Bible or either the Carolina Journal.....or either the Weekly Auto Trader.

I know it is a hard concept to understand but we must try and educate the liberals. There are rich people. And there are poor people. And, just maybe, there are some in the middle. Maybe.

What Liberals Don't Understand

Gosh -

Firstly , I did not say I necessarily agreed with water boarding as I stated.

The liberals in this country are up in arms about this “torture” called water boarding.  There are many angles to look at this issue, the least of which can be the emotional perspective of left.

Meet Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the September 11 “mastermind”  and the “victim.” Seriously read this article

“At a hearing held there released in March 2007, Mr. Mohammed took full credit for the 9/11 attacks and a number of other plots. He also asserted that he had personally decapitated Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. The scope of his confessions led some human-rights advocates to wonder if they reflected the effect of his captivity and harsh interrogation. Other intelligence experts wondered if he were claiming so much to provide cover for former colleagues who might have been involved.”

A number of other plots.”

This segment of the quote is very important in understanding the importance of the use of enhanced interrogation techniques.

The other plots referenced is a “second wave of attacks” in Los Angles.

*Please note that this PDF is from the redacted unclassified memo from the CIA.

The CIA resorted to “water boarding” in order to obtain information concerning this quote by Mohammed.

“Soon you will find out.”

The use of water boarding thwarted an attack and saved 93 American lives.  Thus, is it the liberals’ position that water boarding to save American lives is not worth it when it comes to Mohammed, a very dangerous man?

Mohammed is not protected under American law nor really should be under the Geneva Convention, a bit outdated in this instance.  Why are the liberals making such anti-American claims?

If the Republicans would approach the argument in this manner, it is clear that the liberals are endorsing anti-American sentiments with their emotional propaganda.

While, I do not necessarily agree with water boarding, but it is the governments’ mandate to do what it must to protect the lives of Americans.  Whether you are a Democrat or a Republican, it is your civic obligation to indulge in this notion.

Mohammed should face death in order to retrieve information that will save Americans .  It is a sad facet of the world we live in, but remember what Mohammed did to Daniel Pearl.  < That is what I call torture!

Remember - “tooth for a tooth and an eye for eye” is the mentality of a Muslim extremist.

Mohammed did not care if he died, why, honestly, do the liberals?

Yet, he is still survived.

We must wake up and face reality.

The facts speak louder than words and I hope this encourages you to help educate to liberal masses.

America is rattled by this controversy amidst the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.  With North Korea, Iran, Russia, Venezuela and Cuba getting the “Presidential treatment” and a Department Homeland Security of Napolitano’s capabilities, Americans have legitimate concerns in their fear.

In case you missed it yesterday, the White House decided to take a new photo of Air Force One being accompanied by an F-16 over New York City.  Yet they were left scratching their head as to why mayhem ensued and people evacuated building.

We must wonder about this Administration sometimes.

The only social uprising of fear in this country thus far has been caused directly by the White House.  At some point America will have to get rid of its “hip” impression of Obama.

“Facts over emotion, logic over sensation. “

Re: Burr: Mistake to release memos

He is a politician, firstly, and endured torture of his own, secondly, so it is his agenda to speak out against the issue. The victim ("terrorist" pre-Obama Administration) survived 183 times of water boarding and the information was useful.

I do not necessarily agree with water boarding, but why do you not care about saving American lives? We are talking about real humans unlike late term abortions, the reason your blogging friends are attacking Burr on the other page.

No matter what Burr says you are nothing but slanted...grow up and at least be objective once in a while.

Re: Burr: Mistake to release memos

Gosh - Do you consider waterboarding torture, honestly?

If you are then you are nothing but a pansy - it is only this generation that finds fault with this...

During the time that the Geneva Convention was passed - they would have simply laughed at the liberals outcry.

I am pissed about the release of the memos too- it was strictly political in trying to appease the left and it puts our soldiers, my family members, in danger...

Gosh and the rest of the liberals need to grow up - the world is a harsh place and the left's "premise" that we can all just get along is completely false...Muslim verse Western world has been going on since the beginning of the world - do you think that some talking head like Obama will be able to make a difference...NO

Keep pandering to the left -

Re: Burr: Mistake to release memos

I am proud of Senator Burr and wish we had 99 other senators just like him. I do not care what it takes to keep Americans safe from those idiotic Muslum terrorist. They are idiots who enjoy cutting off the heads of Americans (just ask Daniel Pearle). I would stop at nothing to get information from them to prevent another attack. What is wrong with you wimpy bunch of liberals who have no clue of the crazy world we now live. If you do not like America please leave and go live on a sand doon somewhere in the Middle East and ride camels for pleasure.

I hope we never have another attack but if we do I sure hope the terrorist will pick San Francisco. Please, please do.

This current administration is nothing but a bunch of wimpy liberal feel good woozies. Honestly they don't even deserve to be protected.

Re: Burr: Mistake to release memos

Man Liberals get so emotional about this torture when it was members of their own party that knew just as much about as most in the Bush Administration. Queen Pelosi is all knowing!

Re: Burr: Mistake to release memos

"highly classified OLC memos detailing the legal analysis relating to the CIA’s sensitive interrogation techniques,"* A Senator from the Dark Ages or defending the dark side is a full time job for torture idiots

No doubt Senator Burr has watch too much of 24 and Jack waterboarding that one Dude 183 times in 30 days.

Re: Burr: Mistake to release memos

The U.S. ratified the anti-torture convention that requires the prosecution of those who commit torture. This is not optional. It is both a moral duty and a legal obligation. Under our constitution, treaties are the supreme law of the land. If Senator Burr wishes to cover up evidence of torture, then he has violated his oath to preserve and defend the constitution. If the U.S. refuses to honor its treaty obligations, other nations should take all legally appropriate actions to force the U.S. to behave more nobly than its politicians may desire.

Re: Burr: Mistake to release memos

The republican ideal is facade-like and concentrates more on appearances and symbolism than actual governing.

Re: Burr: Mistake to release memos

"Unfortunate incidents" really says it all. Torture is not a partisan issue, it is a crime -- but if the Republican Party really wants to be known as the pro-torture party, they're welcome to that title.

Re: Burr: Mistake to release memos

Maybe the US shouldn't have engaged in torture in the first place? I have an idea, Burr should resign from Congress in protest. Take a stand for torture, Mr. Burr!

Re: Burr: Mistake to release memos

Oh me, oh my, Burr and what do you (and the Republican Party) have to hide except illegalities Bushy forced upon this nation for 8 years. If Burr cannot take the heat of his party being exposed for what it really is, he and all of the Republicans can leave Washington and not go back. I'm sure there are plenty of people who can take thier places who are decent, law-abiding citizens. Burr now finds himself in the minority party in Washington and he can't take it. Burr has not voted for anything good for the people of this nation for 8 years and now that we have a decent President, Burr is going to have a stroke. Go into retirement Burr and you won't have to worry about anything else. Your pockets are already lined with as much taxpayer money as you can gouge out of us and you have already emptied the ATM machine. What more could you want for a retirement legacy.

Re: Burr: Mistake to release memos

Defending something you know is wrong and continuing to try and spin it is self defeating. There are more truths which will be revealed soon concerning motivations for these "Justice" department memos being written. The memos as part of the convolutions of law, will lead to the real authors. I don't care about prosecutions. I just want some TRUTH. We the people DESERVE it.

Re: Burr: Mistake to release memos

Maybe burr will continue the right wing mantra of fighting against everything Obama does. His run for reelection will make dole's defeat look like a down to the wire finish.

Re: Burr: Mistake to release memos

I am hoping Chairman Obama continues his persecution of the Bush administration. Chairman Obie is setting a dangerous precidence!?! Or is he? Knowing that pay back can be extremely painful; maybe Chairman Obie doesn't plan to ever leave the Office of President! You know of course if he is forced to leave office all the papers/records of HIS actions, private meetings and memos to subordinates will be declared "personal papers" and either go with him or be destroyed! I can't wait for the next Republican releasing all of the paper of the past several Democrat Presidents (Since Truman). And you know it would be fun to see Billy Clinton brought to trial for his Military Attacks on foreign countries and their Governments in the Mideast. Billy did not get Congressional approval for his conduct of war against a foreign country in direct contradiction of the requirement in the Constitution. Gee, Harry Truman, John Kennedy, and Lyndon Johnston could get the same charges presented as well as the current President,(Chairman) Obama for his persuit and expansion of the war in Pakistan. Oh You haven't heard have you, the left wing news orgs. tend to give these stories a low priority; when published they are assigned to the back pages and under a small headline. Ah be loving it - Democrats in Action! Whoops (Lefties in Action)

Re: Burr: Mistake to release memos

CLEAR THE RECORD ...

Senator Burr Says: "The unfortunate incidents ... were shocking and damaged our reputation in the global community, but measures have been taken to prevent occurrences like this from happening in the future."

If the release of the information helps to guarantee that these "unfortunate incidents" don't recur, then it was entirely justified. Obviously we cannot count on those responsible for besmirching the nation's reputation to voluntarily step forward, since to do so would also show that they also had knowingly placed in jeopardy the well-being of American prisoners of war.

I doubt that anyone thinks there is a win-win response to the scurrilous actions of the previous administration. But it is far better to expose the miscreants and make clear that the United States does not condone inhumane treatment of prisoners. Sweeping the matter under the carpet, as Senator Burr suggests, hardly exhibits honorable intentions. Being open and honest is not a sign of weakness, rather it demonstrates strength of character. We could use a little of that.
