Bowles praises Burr at RTP

MSNBC commentator Rachel Maddow may not think much of Sen. Richard Burr, but University of North Carolina president Erskine Bowles thinks he great.

Burr defeated Bowles, Clinton's former White House chief of staff, in the 2004 Senate race. But since then the two men have formed a close working relationship, Rob Christensen reports.

"The Lord moves in mysterious ways," said Bowles, in introducing Burr to a meeting of biopharmaceutical companies meeting at GlaxoSmithKline's headquarters on Thursday.

"I think by the Grace of God we both ended in up in the exact right jobs for North Carolina," Bowles said. "Richard Burr is a champion for North Carolina in the U.S. Senate. Let there be no question in your mind about that. He has an unwavering focus on North Carolina.

"Having someone who is focused on your own state and has a strong and effective voice for North Carolina truly makes the difference. I can tell you from first hand experience, nobody works harder or smarter than this guy does in Washington."

Bowles said that Burr is the first guy he turns to when UNC has issues in Washington.

"I think we are so fortunate to have a man like this in the U.S. Senate," Bowles said.

Think that might show up in a Burr TV next year?

Update: That didn't take long. The National Republican Senatorial Committee e-mailed a link to this post to reporters at 12:30 p.m.

Just reporters? I'm sure fundraising links to real people will follow.

I mean, someone in North Carolina actually does like Burr! This is hard news people.

Edit to add hyperventilating exclamation. I've read NRSC releases before.

The "truth = busted logic" Republican talking point isn't going to end on April 15th! Yea!

It is the gift that keeps on giving.

If you see this as anything other than Burr putting Big Pharma's priorities over those of the citizens he pretends to represent.

Maybe Burr is who the d-bagging, umm, I mean t-bagging, folks were complaining about with their "taxation without representation" chants?

Nah, that's the truth, otherwise known as "busted logic".

And you might even consider reading the article before you respond for a change.

It was a meeting of Big Drug companies and Richard Burr at Burr's top Pharmaceutical donor. Burr is worried that a national health plan will hurt their profits.

Because of the enormous risks and costs involved in developing new drugs, pharmas and biotech companies depend on the products that do reach pharmacy shelves to deliver enough revenue to produce profits. To achieve that goal, drug companies often put hefty price tags on new medicines.

Burr asserted that government involvement in health insurance would reduce the rewards for bringing a new therapy to market.

Yup. And I bet the speech Burr immediately then gave to Big Pharmaceutical companies meeting at $61,748 corporate Burr donor GlaxoSmithKline promising to not hurt their profits by blocking any kind of National Health Plan for the people, will show up in another TV spot about Burr next year too.

You forget - it was BLUENC that is mad at Hagan becoming the moderate and all of their money not getting them "enough in return."
