Under the Dome

Bill would prevent immigration inquiries

Illegal immigrants would continue to have access to state universities and community colleges under legislation filed Tuesday by Reps. Pricey Harrison, Paul Luebke and Rick Glazier.

Their bill would prevent the UNC Board of Governors and the State Board of Community Colleges from requiring prospective students to disclose their immigration status, Dan Kane reports.

The bill does not prevent the universities and community colleges from charging much higher out-of-state rates for students who are not U.S. citizens. That is current practice.

The legislation counters two other bills filed this session by Republican lawmakers that would prevent illegal immigrants from attending the state's universities and community colleges. The issue of those students' admission first surfaced late last year when the community college system announced a new policy telling all 58 campuses that they should admit students regardless of their immigration status.

The national furor over that announcement led the system to get an opinion from state Attorney General Roy Cooper's office. That subsequent opinion found that the system could not admit illegal immigrants. The system has now announced it would no longer admit them. UNC officials say the issue still isn't settled and therefore have not changed their policy to admit illegal immigrants.

Both the community colleges and the UNC system say a tiny percentage of their students are illegal immigrants.

Gov. Mike Easley has come out against barring these students from attending community colleges and UNC schools.

Harrison of Greensboro, Luebke of Durham and Glazier of Fayetteville are all Democrats.

Re: Bill would prevent immigration inquiries

The politicians and their contributors consider United States and North Carolina citizens only as “units of labor” and the sooner we become a Third World Country the better for their “bottom line”! Our elitist politicians and their elitist political contributors will not be happy until they transform the United States into a Third World Country for most of our citizens while furnishing the Chamber of Commerce and all their Elitist Special Interest Groups with their supply of “cheap labor”. The politicians are providing “benefits” to the ILLEGALS on the backs of United States and North Carolina citizens through our assets such as the Education System, Social Security, and Health Care not to mention our National Security!

It is difficult for me to believe that the these people are members of the same Democrat Party as Rep. Heath Shuler, the author of the Pro American Citizen “SAVE” Act! It is my understanding that Democrats at the state level in North Carolina have made this decision, have attempted to block almost all enforcement legislation in the General Assembly, issued hundreds of thousands of licenses to ILLEGALS, and have pushed for other benefits for ILLEGALS and their supporting groups.

I want to see the candidates come out against these benefits for ILLEGALS joining Democrat Rep. Heath Shuler Pro American Stance! If you maintain your Pro ILLEGALS position you will assure North Carolina and United States citizens that there will be an immediate change in Raleigh because it seems that most Republicans at the state level are ahead of the Democrats on Enforcement of our Immigration Laws and Securing our Nation.

Re: Bill would prevent immigration inquiries

They're illegal immigrants, the debate should begin and end with the word ILLEGAL. These Democrat vote-buyers have no shame.

Re: Bill would prevent immigration inquiries

The majority of the people this bill will affect are young people, who were brought to this country as children and raised in our education system. Children, who by denying an education will be forced into poverty-or worse.

Snyderman, unless you are a Native American, your family was once too immigrants. Somewhere along the way someone looked pasted that and helped integrate your family and gave them the opportunity at the American dream.

Unfortunately each generation has a group of new people, whether it is the Irish, Polish, etc, who immigrate to America and work from the ground up to become American citizens. They are told of the promise of America, yet find discrimination from the minute they walk onto our shores. This bill at its base is discrimination.

I am a fourth generation Irish Catholic. In the first five years my great grandfather literally worked himself to death in the textile mills of Lowell, Massachusetts. My grandfather was allowed to go to university, and became a textile engineer-helping to invent the first poly-fibers that were put in the first Apollo.

That's the American dream. That's what this bill aims at by locking the next wave of immigrants out of an education.

"The strength of the United States is not the gold at Fort Knox or the weapons of mass destruction that we have, but the sum total of the education and the character of our people." - Claiborne Pell (1918 - )

The Democrats are once again hiding their head in the sand. Illegals have cost us alot more than just educating them. They are here illegally but are also committing numerous frauds to remain in the country and have been a drain on our educational, social services, and medical services. Not to mention the danger on our roads.
There is just not enough positives for them being here at all. It is funny that liberals support them being here even though they suppress wages for working class folks. I do think Republicans are more for the middle and working classes than Democrats.

Re: Bill would prevent immigration inquiries

I guess after they get that education they'll be able to get illegal jobs. Has anyone told the three legislators that illegals can't vote, or are they going to change that too?

Re: Bill would prevent immigration inquiries

Anyone that thinks that banning "illegal" immigrants from anything in the name of politics has a lot of to learn. This bill is for nothing BUT votes!

Re: Bill would prevent immigration inquiries

This has got to be a joke - right? Please tell me this is a joke!! Please, please tell me this is a joke!!! What kind of people are we electing to office? This is scary that people with these views are running our government. The majority of legal citizens want the illegal immigrants out, and these goofy Democrats want to invite them over for dinner...

Re: Bill would prevent immigration inquiries

What part of ILLEGAL do you not understand Melissa?

Re: Bill would prevent immigration inquiries

It's good to see Democrats standing up to these attacks on young people even though conservatives are failing to see the future implications of denying education simply for political gain.
