Senate Republican Leader Phil Berger said the legislature needs to investigate former Gov. Mike Easley and his wife Mary Easley.
Berger said in a written statement that the revelations of the past few days require even more scrutiny.
"Governor Bev Perdue and Legislative Democrats continue working to cover up the Easley Scandal. Legislative Democrats must begin an exhaustive investigation into this scandal or get out of the way so Republicans can," Berger said in his statement.
Berger issued his statement before the N.C. State University trustees fired Mary Easley from her $170,000 a year job at N.C. State. In addition to calling on the governor and legislative Democrats to push for the end of Easley's job, Berger called for an investigation into a year of missing records that would have detailed the Easley's travels in 2005.
Accountability begins at the top levels of leadership. Governor Perdue should provide the leadership North Carolinians want from her and immediately demand the resignation of Mary Easley. Governor Perdue was not elected to watch as a scandal rages on and the fallout deepens. She was elected to provide accountability and now is the time for her to prove she is willing to do so.

Re: Berger: Dems need to investigate Easleys
It is irrelevant that Mary Easley is "worth way more than her salary" of $170,000. It is irrelevant that the Easleys may have give so much for North Carolina, if that is what they have been truly doing.
It is highly relevant that Mary Easley has taken the innocence from all the Easley supporters and now is known to have obtained her job through back room machinations traced in part by the e-mails now posted here at this site. Even a Congressional Medal of Honor winner can commit crimes that must be prosecuted, much less an indignant former First Lady with a fixed smile on her face, or if not her, the ones who traded in power swaps by getting the benefit of her job for her husband's "favors" to them, all done without competition with the more qualified potential hires.
Pay to play is present everywhere in politics and should be prosecuted everytime it is uncovered.
