Under the Dome

Author says white Southern Democrats are endangered species

Quotable.

In the most recent edition of The American Prospect,  a liberal magazine, is an article by Jamelle Bouie about the decline of Southern white Democrats,  entitled “Gone With the 2010 Win.”

“The era of the white Southern Democrat has really come to an end now,” says Thomas Schaller, author of 'Whistling Past Dixie: How Democrats Can Win Without The South.' There will always be a few dinosaurs roaming the piedmont of North Carolina, but if you see one, take a picture like the Loch Ness Monster, because your friends won't believe you.”

Schaller may prove to a prophet after redistricting, when the Republican legislature is expected to target white Democratic Congressman Brad Miller, Mike McIntyre, Larry Kissell, and Heath Shuler.

what?

Okay, I hope the actual article in the magazine makes some sense, because this quote qualifies as a ridiculously false and over-blown statement. Because, as is obvious to everyone, there are plenty of white Southern Democrats serving as elected officials throughout the South, and particularly in North Carolina. Our governor happens to be one. So does our junior U.S. senator, our lieutenant governor, secretary of state, state auditor, attorney general, chief justice of the state supreme court, and the list goes on and on. Even if all the white Southern democratic congressmen from N.C. were eliminated in redistricting, that certainly would not mean the end of an era. I'm going to presume that the article is specifically about the U.S. House of Representatives, and while the House is important, it ain't the whole thing.

Proud Southern Democrat

White complexion is only one dimension of our character, and most all North Carolina Democrats aren't likely to join the Republican assualt on public education, community colleges and Universities at the state level, and attacks on Medicare and Social Security, that we have paid into our whole lives, just because of skin color. Republicans already got the "white vote" from the Dixicrats, but those days are long since passed. Republicans are headed for a bridge too far when they accuse working families of being "parasites" because of our enjoyment of public schools, roads, environmental and safety regulations, and other investments that  wealthy "winners" have to join us in paying taxes to support.
