Appointees supervise more state workers

Elected officials supervise fewer employees than appointees.

As with spending, it appears that the Cabinet positions tend to have larger responsibilities than members of the Council of State.

The smallest Cabinet department has more employees than all but two of the Council of State departments.

Below, the number of permanent full-time employees, according to the Office of State Personnel.

Agriculture: 1,258

Justice: 1,186

Public Instruction: 593

Labor: 397

Insurance: 385

Treasurer: 323

Auditor: 177

Secretary of State: 163

Governor: 70

Lieutenant Governor: 8

The governor, of course, has the power to appoint a number of state officials, including the Cabinet, who oversee other employees, so these figures are not representative.
