North Carolina Democrats know that when you need a closer, you turn to Andy Griffith.
Now, President Barack Obama has apparently turned to Andy. Well, technically, Medicare has turned to the Manteo resident to spread the word to seniors about the changes coming through the new health care law.
Griffith assures Medicare recipients that their benefits are not in danger.
"This year like always we'll have our guaranteed benefits," Griffith says. "And with the new health care law, more good things are coming."
Griffith cites free checkups, lower prescription costs and fraud prevention as some of those "good things."

With Truman Looking On
July 31, 2010 - 3:50pm — ProctorThis fine spot opens with former President Harry Truman looking on as President Lyndon Johnson signed the Medicare legislation into law in 1965. Truman had retired from the White House in January 1953, but even in retirement, "The Man From Independence" kept close watch on major political developments in Washington and across the country.
Some of Andy Griffith's recent detractors seem a might bit upset that the Mount Airy native is expressing some encouraging words about the Nation's new health plan. Like Truman's critics back in the 1940s and 1950s, they would rather throw brickbats rather than seek out the truth according to the facts of the issue at hand.
So aside from the catcalls and the disparaging tactics of selected boo-birds, Andy Griffith's assessment of the new health care plan should be taken to heart for what they really are: one North Carolinian's personal and informed view of the changes now taking effect in health care policy in this country.
And beyond the issue of health care, the carping and smart remarks by some of those on the sidelines will not chip away at all from Andy Griffith's record of entertainment achievement and public service throughout the land.

Yay! Tell 'em Andy!!
July 31, 2010 - 8:21am — Isaac136I'm shocked, just shocked really, at the very unpleasant remarks directed toward this venerable saint of NC. Andy, as all good southerners know, would never steer ya wrong. Andy is wise. Andy is responsible. And now Andy is telling us that we need to grow up and stop name calling and appreciate this badly needed health care reform.
Thank you, Andy.
I like Andy, but ...
July 30, 2010 - 9:16pm — penniless_taxpayerI don't take financial or legal or medical advice from an actor. The best financial analysts I can find tells me that Obamacare will greatly increase the national debt. The best insurance analysts I can find tells me it will indeed increase medical premiums. The best constitutional lawyers I can find tells me that it is socialized medicine in the worst way. The best doctors I can find tell me it will be a bureaucratic nightmare with Government dictating what they can and cannot do with reimbursement. Sorry Andy, but like Barney used to say ... we got to nip it in the bud.
REPEAL OBAMACARE. NO SOCIALIZED HEALTH CARE.
He can afford it
July 30, 2010 - 8:33pm — SaintPinehurstI bet he won't miss the $500 billion taken out of Medicare to fund this monstrosity.
There was a great comment left at WXII TV 12 . . .
July 30, 2010 - 8:29pm — DrMaryJohnsonSo. "Good things are coming", and happy days are here again. I would say more, but I think I just saw a pig fly by my window and I have to go check it out.
Wish I'd said that. But I can go look for some lipstick for that pig.
"had to have been a been to be a has been"
July 30, 2010 - 7:03pm — jackrabQuoting Frank Rouse from his TV news show from days past in Carteret County, one must "have been a been to be a hasbeen" aptly describes old Andy. It is very sad and disappointing to see Andy in this state of codger-hood.
Such a shame that Andy's become a commie
