GREENSBORO -- The John Edwards trial opened Monday morning with as much focus on Andrew Young, a campaign aide who wrote a tell-all book, as the man accused in the case.
Shortly after settling on the nine men and seven women who will make up the jury group of 12 and four alternates, Judge Catherine Eagles gave defense attorneys permission to mention in opening statements that Young had contacted three witnesses on the defense list to find out what they planned to say at trial.
Young, who prosecutors and defense lawyers contend, helped channel hundreds of thousands of dollars from two wealthy supporters to living expenses Rielle Hunter, the campaign videographer with whom Edwards had an affair and a child. Young was expected to take the stand Monday afternoon.
