Half of Dem senators gave to Perdue

More than half of Democratic senators gave to Beverly Perdue.

According to campaign finance reports, 18 of the 31 state senators from the gubernatorial nominee's party have made donations to her since her re-election in 2004. They range from $250 to several thousand dollars.

In all, she received $33,210 from Democratic senators.

The donations are significant because as lieutenant governor, Perdue runs the state Senate. Among North Carolina Democrats, state senators have seen her in action the most.

Most gave from their campaign committees.

The biggest donor was Senate Majority Leader Tony Rand, who gave a total of $8,000. Sen. Dan Clodfelter gave $4,500, Sen. Clark Jenkins gave $4,000, Sens. Julia Boseman and Linda Garrou gave $3,000, and Sen. William Purcell gave $2,000.

Boseman faces revelations

State Sen. Julia Boseman stuck to business Tuesday.

The New Hanover Democrat declined to talk about disclosures that she defaulted on a $1.3 million loan on her former home and smoked marijuana the year before she was elected to the legislature.

Duringa child custody hearing in December, Boseman testified that she had problems with drugs at the tail end of her relationship with her then-domestic partner in 2003. Details of her financial troubles surfaced at a different court hearing last week. (AP)

Boseman, the first openly gay legislator in North Carolina, said that she willingly testified in order to keep access to her adopted son.

"Some time ago, I was faced with a choice of losing my son or having the most intimate details of my private life exposed to the public," she said. "Like any good parent, I put my son before everything else in my life and will continue to fight for him and my family."

Her Republican opponent, attorney Michael Lee, said he would focus on political differences in his campaign. (WS-N)

Boseman defaults on loan

State Sen. Julia Boseman's house has been foreclosed on.

The Wilmington Democrat and her former domestic partner defaulted on a $1.3 million mortgage on a house near the Intracoastal Waterway, the Wlimington Star-News reports.

The house will now likely be sold at a public auction later this month.

Boseman and Melissa Jarrell, the head softball coach at UNC-Wilmington, failed to make $7,156 worth of payments on the house since Aug. 1, 2007.

According to property records, the couple purchased the house together in June of 2005, but Boseman transferred the property title to Jarrell in April, removing her name from the title.

"It is my ex-partner's house, and I haven't lived there in over two years," Boseman told the newspaper.
