Same time, same place for GOP women

A Republican women's group will also hold a victory breakfast.

The Committee to Elect Republican Women will hold its annual celebration of female GOP politicians at the same time and place as Lillian's List, a pro-choice Democratic women's group.

The two events will be held separately at the Cardinal Club in Raleigh on Jan. 28.

While Democratic Gov.-elect Beverly Perdue will address the Lillian's List gathering, the Committee to Elect Republican Women does not plan to have speakers.

"We just invite folks to come, have breakfast with us and meet our new legislators," said Rep. Julia Howard, the group's current head.

She said it was a coincidence that the two groups are meeting at the same time, perhaps because it's the same day that legislators will be sworn in and start the session.

"For some reason, that happened last year, too," she said.

Perdue to address Lillian's List

Gov.-elect Beverly Perdue will speak at a Lillian's List gathering.

Perdue will be the keynote speaker at a Jan. 28 "victory breakfast" by the group, which promotes pro-choice female candidates in North Carolina.

The event will be held at the Cardinal Club on the penthouse levels of the Raleigh skyscraper known for the time being as the Wachovia Capitol Center.

It's not known what Perdue will say, but the state's first female governor will no doubt reference the group's namesake, first female Southern legislator Lillian Exum Clement.

The breakfast will also honor candidates backed by the group, including state Reps. Alice Bordsen, Jane Whilden, Margaret Dickson, Alice Underhill, Lucy Allen, Linda Coleman, Maggie Jeffus and Jennifer Weiss.

Tickets cost $100. Sponsorships are also available for $250 to $4,000.

Federalist Society addresses 527s

The Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies will hold a panel discussion Wednesday to discuss the possible impact of 527 organizations on the upcoming state and federal elections.

A 527 organization is a tax-exempt organization under federal tax code. The term often refers to advocacy groups, such as MoveOn.org and the Swift Vets and POWs for Truth, that avoid regulation by the Federal Election Commission and state elections.

It is illegal for such groups to coordinate advertising with campaigns.

The panel will include Republican consultant Carter Wrenn, Democratic consultant Brad Crone, N.C. Board of Elections Chairman Larry Leake and election law attorney James Bopp. WRAL-TV anchor David Crabtree will moderate.

The event will begin with a 5:30 p.m. reception at the Cardinal Club in Raleigh. The panels will be from 6:15 to 8 p.m. For more information, contact phil.strach@ogletreedeakins.com.
