Obama trying to make N.C. blue

David Plouffe, campaign manager for Barack Obama, said this afternoon that the campaign is committed to turning the Southern red states of Virginia and North Carolina blue in November.

“Virginia and North Carolina, from day one, have been key to our strategy of winning the White House and it remains so today,” Plouffe said in a teleconference with reporters from North Carolina and Virginia, reports Rob Christensen.

Plouffe said there was a massive voter registration effort underway in those two states. He said that during the last weekend in September, 100,000 doors will be knocked on in North Carolina. He said early voting should work to Obama’s advantage.

The McCain campaign’s decision to go on TV in North Carolina, he said, was another indication that the state is competitive.

“We think its a coin flip right now," Plouffe said. "We think it will break our way during the next seven and half weeks.”

Howard Dean coming to Raleigh

Democratic national chairman Howard Dean will be in North Carolina next Friday as part of a national voter registration drive.

Dean, the former Vermont governor and presidential candidate, began the 50-state tour this week in President Bush’s home town of Crawford, Texas, reports Rob Christensen.

Dean is traveling in a bio-diesel bus in an effort to mobiize voters for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and other Democratic candidates.

Dean will be in Raleigh at 9 a.m. on Friday, then in Greensboro at noon, and in Charlotte at 3:30. Details of locations are still being worked out.

Wayans brothers to hit trail for Obama

Actors Shawn and Marlon Wayans will be visiting North Carolina colleges this weekend on behalf of Barack Obama.

Their mission - to get students registered to vote.

Obama's campaign announced today that the Wayans brothers will be part of a larger effort to get people registered by North Carolina's April 11 deadline.

The actors are scheduled to visit N.C. State, N.C. Central, UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke, N.C. A&T, UNC-Greensboro, Winston-Salem State and Wake Forest.

What would you like to ask Barack Obama?

The Democratic presidential candidate is planning to visit North Carolina this week. We still don't have details on his visit, but we hope to get a chance to ask him some questions about issues of concern to North Carolina voters. We'll try to do the same when Hillary Clinton visits.
