Anti-gang program director will run for House

The executive director of an anti-gang program says she will run for one of the open state House seats in Wake County. Abeni El-Amin held a kickoff event Monday at a downtown Raleigh coffee house in her campaign for District 38. Former Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker attended the kickoff.

El-Amin was a contender for the seat vacated in 2009 when Dan Blue moved from the House to the Senate. That job eventually went to Rosa Gill.

One-time Raleigh City Council candidate Lee Sartain, an education policy specialist at N.C. State University, is also in the running in the Democratic primary.

El-Amin is executive director of Project Ricochet. She is a former chairwoman of the city’s Human Relations Commission.
