If North Carolina had an official rock song, what would it be?

Dome and our brother-in-blogging David Menconi opened up the lines for your suggestions earlier this week.

The top five suggestions, as judged by no particular standard, are:

* "Carolina in My Mind," by James Taylor: The hands-down frontrunner, a classic song with inoffensive lyrics and a secret darker edge.

* "Carolina Girls," by General Johnson and the Chairmen of the Board: The beach music classic that spawned a thousand "Best in the World" T-shirts.

* "Oh My Sweet Carolina," by Ryan Adams with Emmylou Harris: A touching duet about leaving the South from a guy who never visits.

* "Raleigh," by Rey Norteno: Perhaps a controversial pick with some, but few bands have sung so movingly about why they love Raleigh.

* "Wagon Wheel," by Old Crow Medicine Show: OK, so it's not rock either, but it's got to be in the running for neo-traditional bluegrass song.

Clinton's playlist

Hillary Clinton's music playlist is the same as her husband's.

The hourlong set, which has already repeated at this morning's Wake Tech event, is the same as the one at a recent Bill Clinton event in North Carolina.

The list is typical album-oriented rock: "Life is a Highway" by Tom Cochrane, "A Little Less Conversation" by Elvis vs. JXL and "There Goes My Hero" by the Foo Fighters, among others.

It also has a favorite by a local boy made good: "Firecracker" by Ryan Adams.

Incidentally, that same song was on John Edwards' playlist when he was campaigning for president.

Elizabeth Edwards took the stage to the sounds of North Carolina native Ryan Adams' "Firecracker."

On stage at a textile mill in Manchester, N.H., the wife of Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards struck an optimistic note despite the campaign's third-place finish, recalling his father's work in a mill.

"You never get anything you don't work for," she said. "No one ever promised Wallace Edwards it was going to be an easy job to work his way up."

"This day, we have taken steps, not as big a step as we wanted," she said. "The goal is still in sight."

Edwards then took the stage to the sounds of John Mellencamp's "This is Our Country."
