E. Dole remembers Jack Kemp

Former U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole remembered Jack Kemp Sunday.

Speaking with her husband Bob at a lecture at the University of Kansas, Dole told a crowd of between 500 and 1,000 students that the former Congressman was full of energy and enthusiasm when he helped her campaign in North Carolina.

"Jack believed in what he was doing with all his heart," she said, according to the Topeka Capital Journal. "He will be truly missed."

Kemp, a former Congressman who was Bob Dole's vice presidential pick, died of cancer Saturday. In October, he campaigned on a bus tour for Elizabeth Dole's re-election with Sen. Richard Burr in five mountain counties.

She also said she was disappointed with Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter's decision to switch parties and with the recent tone in Washington.

"In recent years, it's become much more raucous," she said, according to KTKA TV. "You feel like it's almost combat now. I do think we have to work hard at getting that civility back."

Dole added that she and her husband also plan to go on the NutriSystem diet plan.

U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole's political action committee has received $848,615 in the last three years.

The Leadership Circle PAC is separate from Dole's campaign committee, so it can receive bigger contributions from donors. As a recent report and database from NPR's Marketplace shows, leadership PACs like it are booming.

Many of Dole's contributors are familiar faces.

Between December of 2004 and December of 2007, her leadership PAC received $20,000 from lieutenant governor candidate Robert Pittenger and his wife, Suzanne; $16,750 from former gubernatorial candidate Bill Graham and his wife, Shari; and $10,000 from SAS co-founder Jim Goodnight.

Other donations came from Raleigh lawyer Kieran Shanahan, CaptiveAire owner Bob Luddy, her husband Bob, Luther Hodges Jr., billionaire resort builder Kirk Kerkorian, Raleigh developer John Kane, and former Dole running mate Jack Kemp.

The Leadership Circle PAC also received money from other PACs, including the Progress Energy PAC, Wachovia Employees Good Government Fund, the N.C. Farm Bureau, and PACs for R.J. Reynolds, Lorillard Tobacco Co., Duke Energy and Federal Express.

Myrick hosts Kemp

U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick will host Jack Kemp in Charlotte.

The former Republican vice presidential candidate will be the honored guest at a luncheon at 11:30 a.m. April 28 at the Westin Charlotte.

Miner working for Moore

Former state Rep. David Miner is also raising money for Richard Moore.

The Wake County Republican has known the Democratic gubernatorial candidate since the two were freshman legislators in 1992. Back then, Miner was the youngest Republican in the House and Moore the youngest Democrat.

"With all due respect, I think he's the best candidate for governor in either party," he told Dome.

Miner has a long history as a Republican fundraiser, having gathered donations for the presidential campaigns of Jack Kemp in 1998, Bob Dole in 1996 and George W. Bush in 2000. He'll be at a fundraiser for Rudy Giuliani tonight.

Still, he said the personal connection matters.

"He asked me to help two and a half years ago," he said. "That's always important in politics—somebody who takes the time to call and ask for your support."
