Designers Downtown Market is back...

I am always glad to find the fun open air markets that pop up every now and then. They're great for meeting people and also finding unique gifts.

If you like them, too, you may want to plan to attend the Designersss Downtown Market, which is coming up on March 13 (that would be this Saturday). This particular market happens five times a year, and this will be the first one for 2010.

Dress Barn SOS is coming...

Ladies, here's a heads up to start digging through your closet for a good cause.

Dress Barn has long partnered with a nonprofit called Dress for Success, which helps outfit underprivileged women with work clothes in the hopes of helping them attain and keep a job. And now it is preparing for its annual fundraiser called "SOS," which stands for "send one suit."

If you know someone getting married, you might encourage them to attend Belk's Engagement Party, which is coming up on Thursday, Feb. 18. The party will take place in all of Belk's "home store" departments (ie, the department that sells home goods) from 6 to 9 p.m.

Consultants will be on hand and there will be food, refreshments, etc. All couples will receive wedding registry planner, and those who create a Belk registry while they are there will be eligble to win a $25 Belk gift card and a number of prizes, including two vouchers for airline tickets or a cruise, two nights at the Biltmore Inn, a $900 pearl necklace or $1,000 in cash.

Jim Belushi coming to Triangle Town Center

Actor Jim Belushi will be making an appearance at Triangle Town Center Sunday to promote awareness of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

He'll be at the mall from 1 to 4 p.m. in Center Court on the lower level.

Christmas market today at Seaboard...

A local nonprofit called Raleigh Sister Cities is sponsoring an International Christmas Market today from noon to 6 p.m. at Seaboard Station in downtown Raleigh. Funds raised will help support the Raleigh Sister Cities student exchange programs.

The market will feature booths from Raleigh's sister cities: Hull, UK; Compiegne, France; Rostock, Germany; and Xiangfan, China. Each booth will have foods, beverages and holiday trinkets for sale. There will also be a silent auction featuring gifts from the merchants at Seaboard and a visit from Santa of course.

Donate canned food, get a discount...

During the month of December, Green Front Interior and Rugs in Raleigh is hosting a canned food drive combined with a discount event.

For each can donated at the store, customers received 1 percent off any regularly priced item in the store. You can donate as many cans as you'd like, but the maximum discount you can earn is 10 percent. All donations will be given to the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina. The store is at 2004 Yonkers Road.

Just a reminder that this week, Cary Academy will hold its annual Holiday Shoppe. This is a free event featuring lots of locally crafted jewelry, home accessories, hostess items, children’s items, holiday ornaments, apparel, food and a handmade crafts. Tree lighting at North Hills...

Tonight's the night they light the Christmas tree at North Hills. The lighting won't happen until evening but there are events all day starting at 11 a.m.

From 3 to 7 p.m. there will be ice skating on the Commons lawn and miniature pony rides. From 4 to 7 there will be horse and carriage rides, train rides and other entertainment. The lighting itself is scheduled for 5:40 p.m.

A 'New Moon' party...

If you know any teens who are obsessed with the Twilight series, you might want to point them in the direction of Peche de Chocolat at 16 Glenwood Ave. in Raleigh.

On Saturday, from 3 to 9 p.m., the store will host a New Moon party. There will be door prizes, games and a raffle drawing in which you can win tickets to see the new movie. And, of course, there will be chocolate. Admission is $10.
