Here's another fun kid event you might consider... Home Depot and Balazs Szabo will be hosting a kids' workshop tomorrow from 9 a.m. to noon at the Home Depot at 9517 Strickland Road in Raleigh. Szabo and associates from Home Depot will be teaching kids how to build art easels. Could be cool...

Sale for the Season...

The Visual Art Exchange Sale for the Season opens tonight and could be a good place to find a unique gift. The event features art pieces that are small (under 20 inches) and priced between $20 and $300. The gallery at 325 Blake St. is also open extended holiday hours begining today: Tuesdays through Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Fridays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Tree lighting in Clayton...

In Clayton, the Christmas Village & Tree Lighting is happening tomorrow (Thursday), beginning at 6 p.m. The tree lighting will take place just before 9. If you are interested in going, there's a schedule of events here and a map here. And, if you happen to live in the area, you should know that Main Street will be closed from Smith Street to O'Neil Street between 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. for the event.

Ridgewood Turkey Trot...

If you're looking for something active to do prior to stuffing your face with Thanksgiving dinner, how about the Ridgewood Turkey Trot? The annual event benefits the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and is tied to the Ridgewood Shopping Center in Raleigh (where the Whole Foods is on Wade Avenue). The 2008 Turkey Trot will feature four events: a competitive and noncompetitive 8k race, a mile fun run and a kids' dash. Along with the fastest runners, every one hundredth 8k competitive race participant to cross the finish line will receive a free pair of Mizuno shoes from Fleet Feet Sports of Raleigh. Shoes for a good cause...

Our area's two New Balance stores are collecting new and gently worn shoes for a charity called Soles4Souls, which gives the shoes to those in need worldwide. Both the Raleigh store in Pleasant Valley Promenade on Glenwood Avenue and the Durham store across from the Street at Southpoint will collect shoes through the end of the year. Customers who donate will be eligible to receive a discount of $10 off one pair and $25.00 off two pair of adult New Balance shoes or $5 off one pair and $15.00 off two pair of kid’s New Balance shoes. In the past years, donations have helped people in need in over 40 countries and five continents.

Seaboard open house...

Raleigh's Seaboard Station is also hosting an event today. The holiday open house will run from noon to 5 p.m. Merchants will be offering special deals and hoping to see you there. Holiday gala at Stone Creek...

The Stone Creek Village shopping center in Cary will be hosting a shopping gala this evening from 6 to 10 p.m. There will be complimentary food, live music and free chair massages. There will also be raffle prizes worth more than $500. You can register for the drawing in the space next to the Pink Alli. The shopping center is at the corner of High House and Davis Drive.

Oh, Christmas tree...

Raleigh's North Hills shopping center will be lighting its big 41-foot Christmas tree tomorrow at 6 p.m. There will be lots of music, festivities and of course an appearance by Santa. Tomorrow also marks the start of extended hours for the North Hills merchants, and they will be offering previews and goodies for shoppers from 5 to 8 p.m. during a "Sip n Stroll" event.

And while we're talking about North Hills, here's one more item to note: Starting Saturday, merchants in North Hills will be giving out $25 coupons when you spend $100 or more in a single transaction. The coupon is good for a purchase of $25 or more by Dec. 24. The national chains will not be participating, and some of the smaller retailers will not either, but most of them will be. All merchants who are participating will display one of the coupons in their window, or you could just ask.
