Weekend roundup: Get an insider's view of the John Edwards trial

The federal courtroom where John Edwards is on trial is not big enough for all the spectators. But those who are shut out can still get an insider’s view of exhibits being discussed. In an unusual move, Judge Catherine Eagles has asked the clerks to post exhibits already published to the jury on a public website. Read more here.

Dean raises money in NC

National Democratic Chairman Howard Dean took a swing through North Carolina Tuesday, holding fundraisers and meeting with his old presidential rival, John Edwards.

Dean held a luncheon in Charlotte and then attended a reception at the home of David Kirby, a Raleigh trial attorney and former Edwards law partner, reports Rob Christensen.

“He was just an incredibly nice, kind-spirited person,” Kirby said. “Howard Dean up-close-and personal is a gentler, kinder Howard Dean than what some of us have seen on television.”

Among the 30 people attending the Democratic National Committee fundraiser in Raleigh were Attorney General Roy Cooper and state Senate candidate Josh Stein. The cost of the event ranged from $500 to $5,000 per person.

Later, Dean had dinner with Edwards at Crook’s Corner Restaurant in Chapel Hill. Edwards and Dean were rival for the 2004 Democratic presidential nomination.

S.C. Dems to move primary?

South Carolina Democrats want to move their primary to Jan. 19.

The change would help the primary coincide with the state's Republican primary, and it would keep Florida from moving ahead of the state, The State reports.

It could also affect former N.C. Sen. John Edwards' campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination. Edwards was born in Seneca, S.C., and won first place in the state's 2004 primary.

Given the compressed timeline of the 2008 primary season, that could either help Edwards — by moving a potentially easier win earlier in the election cycle — or hurt him — by draining financial resources for television ads and campaign staffers more quickly.

The date change requires approval from the Democratic National Committee

Edwards moves staffers

John Edwards' presidential campaign is shifting some of its staffers out of Nevada and sending them to Iowa and New Hampshire.

Jonathan Prince, the deputy campaign manager said the change was prompted by the likelihood that Iowa and New Hampshire would move up their caucus and primary next year, Rob Christensen reports.

The Edwards campaign is not de-emphasizing the Nevada caucus, Prince said.

Edwards, meanwhile, is calling on the Democratic National Committee, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee to follow his lead and not accept any contribution from federal lobbyists.
