Group rallies against health care bill

About 150 demonstrators held signs and chanted outside U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge's downtown Raleigh office Tuesday.

Etheridge has not yet said how he intends to vote on the Democratic proposals for health care reform and the ralliers hoped to push him to a "no."

With the health care debate headed toward another showdown in the U.S. House, the fight spilled out on opposite sides of Fayetteville Street in Raleigh on Thursday with competing rallies, chants, speeches and signs.

Members of the Tea Party movement and other opponents of President Barack Obama's health care proposal staged a lunch time rally across the street from the office of Democratic U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge, who last year voted for the Democratic health care bill, but has not taken a position on the upcoming vote, Rob Christensen reports.

Smoot, who was finance director for Barack Obama's presidential campaign, replaces Desiree Rogers who came under criticism when a socialite couple crashed a White House party last year, Rob Christensen reports.

Ads target Democrats on health care

U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge, a Democrat from Lillington, is one of 18 members of Congress being targeted in an ad campaign by a conservative group that urges them to "start over" on health care.

The 60 Plus Association, a Washington-area based organization that opposes Democratic proposals on health care, began running the ads today, reports Rob Christensen. The campaign comes as President Barack Obama plans to host a health care summit next week, and Republican lawmakers are pushing for Democrats to scrap their health care plan and start fresh.

The 2010 campaign season formally opened at noon today, with candidates lining up in the board room of the State Board of Elections in downtown Raleigh to pay their filing fee.

Among the early filers were Democratic Congressmen Bob Etheridge of Lillington and Larry Kissell of Biscoe, and Libertarian Senate candidate Michael Beitler, Rob Christensen reports. The majority of the candidates were running for judge or district attorney.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution Thursday co-sponsored by U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge to raise awareness of cancer detection.

The House resolution designates May as "Early Detection Month," and is meant to raise awareness about early detection of all forms of cancer, Barb Barrett reports.

But plans by Titan America to build one of the biggest cement factories in the country in Castle Hayne is a gift that some would rather return because the jobs and tax dollars would come with enough poisonous byproducts to be measured by the pound. (N&O)

ANYTHING WILL DO: Gov. Bev Perdue had to amend her campaign finance reports because of more undisclosed flights, a fact Republicans compared to the transgressions of embattled former Gov. Mike Easley. Later in the week, Perdue had a spokeswoman explain that Perdue stayed completely out of recruiting a business that was represented by her son. And her approval rating dipped back into the 20s. Perdue may want to add "good news" to her Christmas list.

Wrenn is back in action

Carter Wrenn, who for decades struck fear into the hearts of North Carolina Democrats, is getting back into the political consulting business.

Wrenn has signed on as general consultant and chief strategist to help Renee Ellmers, a registered nurse and Republican who plans to challenge Democratic U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge, Rob Christensen reports. He also agreed to a similar role for Raleigh publisher Bernie Reeves, if Reeves decides to challenge Democratic U.S. Rep. Brad Miller next year.
