Bush visits Greensboro nonprofit

President George W. Bush has arrived in Greensboro.

Bush is making a quick stop in Greensboro today for a roundtable discussion at Youth Focus, a nonprofit that mentors children of prisoners. The event is closed to the public and the press.

The White House released a transcript of Bush's brief remarks. Bush said he set a goal for the nation that from 2003 to 2008 to match 100,000 children with mentors. As of September, that goal has been surpassed.

"I want to thank you all for being a part of a program that hopefully is bringing hope to people's lives. I think it is," Bush said.

Carlisle: Diversity is key for Perdue

Linda Carlisle says diversity will strengthen the new administration.

The retired Greensboro businesswoman, who was added Monday to Gov.-elect Beverly Perdue's transition team, said that having male and female staffers with diverse ethnic backgrounds will improve decision-making.

"We reach better decisions and get better results when we have all levels of diversity," she told Dome. "It will make whatever is done better, stronger and more effective."

As a vice president at a major North Carolina bank in the 1970s, Carlisle remembers when few women or minorities held positions of power. More recently, she was the only woman on the original board of the state lottery.

A longtime resident of the Triad, she said geographic diversity is also important for the newly elected governor.

"It's always difficult to ensure that those outside of (Raleigh) have a sense that they're being heard," she said.

Carlisle first met Perdue when she was lieutenant governor and worked as a fundraiser and volunteer for her gubernatorial campaign. She was appointed to the lottery commission and the UNC-Greensboro board of trustees by Gov. Mike Easley.

Cone: Palin lost 'pro-America' Guilford

The Greensboro blogger points out that the Republican presidential ticket lost handily in Guilford County, where Palin famously said that she likes visiting the "pro-America" parts of the country.

McCain campaign had 36 offices

John McCain had 36 offices in North Carolina.

The Republican presidential candidate had offices in the major cities, such as Greensboro, Asheville and Wilmington.

Though several offices were located around the Charlotte and Raleigh areas, there was only one office within the cities proper.

Unlike Barack Obama's mostly independent offices, pretty much all of the McCain campaign offices were located within a local Republican Party headquarters or in space shared with them.

In addition, another 30 local parties ran phone banks and canvassing operations on their own.

The shared offices were part of the shared financing of McCain's campaign.

"The Republican National Committee was raising a lot of money, while the DNC was not," said N.C. Republican Party spokesman Brent Woodcox. "Particularly after the public campaign financing kicked in, it made more sense for the state parties to set up these offices."

Barack Obama had 50 offices in North Carolina.

The Democratic presidential candidate had offices in the major cities, such as Greensboro, Durham and Asheville. Some had more than one: There were three offices in Charlotte and three in Raleigh, including his central campaign headquarters.

But he also hit smaller rural towns such as Supply and Mount Airy.

Most of the offices were independent operations. Only four were located in local party headquarters.

Although Obama did not have offices in all 100 counties, spokesman Paul Cox said that several in western counties covered bigger regions.

"We didn't have an office in every county, but every county was hit by our organization," he said.

Palin's visits to N.C.

Sarah Palin has drawn big crowds in North Carolina.

Below are crowd estimates from events held during the general election by the Republican vice presidential candidate.

In all, the crowd estimates total about 22,600, though some supporters may have been at more than one event.

Greenville: Palin spoke to a crowd of about 8,000 at East Carolina University on Oct. 7 then watched the second presidential debate with Pat McCrory and Sens. Elizabeth Dole and Richard Burr.

Elon: Palin spoke to around 2,000 people at Elon University on Oct. 16 then attended a private fundraiser in Greensboro.

Asheville: Palin addressed more than 7,600 people at a rally in the Asheville Civic Center on Oct. 26. Thousands more were turned away.

Raleigh: Palin spoke to more than 5,000 people at the Exposition Center at the State Fairgrounds on Nov. 1. (Note: WRAL estimated the crowd at 10,000. There was no official estimate.)

Jay-Z to tour for Obama

Jay-Z is coming to North Carolina to get out the vote.

The hip hop star will make two stops Saturday at the Phillip O. Berry Academy in Charlotte and N.C. A&T University in Greensboro on behalf of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

McCain's visits to N.C.

John McCain has made few visits to North Carolina.

While Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has spoken to crowds totaling 169,050 in almost all of the major metropolitan areas of the state, McCain has come here only a handful of times.

McCain has also held mostly smaller speeches and meetings instead of the larger rallies held by Obama, though as Election Day neared he's held more rallies.

In all, McCain has spoken to about 17,900 people.

Before Primary:

Charlotte, May 5: McCain gave a speech on foreign policy before a crowd of 200 at the Charlotte Chamber.

Greensboro, May 5: McCain gave a speech on his judicial philosophy before "a large crowd of students" at Wake Forest University.

After Primary:

Montreat, June 29: McCain met privately with Rev. Billy Graham and his son Franklin at their retreat, Little Piney Cove.

Wilmington, Oct. 14: McCain gave a speech at a rally of 2,500 at Cape Fear Community College.

Concord, Oct. 18: McCain spoke to 7,000 at a rally in Concord.

Fayetteville, Oct. 28: McCain spoke to 8,200.

Biden in Greensboro Monday

Joe Biden will also visit Greensboro Monday.

The Democratic vice presidential candidate was scheduled to be on an early vote promotional bus tour in Greenville.

He'll also appear at the Price Bryan Performance Place in Greensboro at 2:15 p.m.
