North Carolina's marriage vote second lowest total in the South

North Carolina approved an amendment Tuesday to enshrine a ban on gay marriage, civil unions and domestic partnerships in the state constitution -- a vote that received international attention.

To put it in perspective, the amendment passed 61 percent to 39 percent -- the second lowest approval rating in the South, more than Virginia's 57 percent and less than Florida's 62 percent.

Nationwide, North Carolina voters gave it a higher percentage approval than eight states but less than 22 others.

President Barack Obama planned to visit North Carolina on Election Day

UPDATED: President Barack Obama was scheduled, albeit briefly, to visit North Carolina on Election Day to make an speech in Asheville about the economy.

The White House sent the notice Wednesday last week but reversed course about five hours later, according to a North Carolina congressional office notified about the visit. The false alarm isn't unprecedented -- but the fact the White House even considered traveling to the state on primary election day is interesting.

A controversial vote on a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage and civil unions is on today's ballot. Obama issued a statement against the amendment earlier this year -- but polls show it is likely to win by a solid margin.

N.C. Catholic churches push for marriage amendment

North Carolina's Catholic churches are urging parishioners to support a constitutional amendment to define marriage as between one woman and one man.

In a letter distributed Sunday, Raleigh Bishop Michael Burbidge and Charlotte Bishop Peter Jugis ask church members to "become informed about our Church's teaching."

"We pray that you will see our position as a principled one based on eternal and divine truth and that you will vote on May 8 FOR protecting traditional marriage in North Carolina," the letter states.

The letter doesn't mention same-sex marriage. The amendment would put a constitutional ban on recognition of gay marriage and civil unions, which already are illegal.

Harnett elections chief resigns, cites constitutional amendment banning gay marriage

The Harnett County elections chief resigned earlier this month because she cannot oversee a constitutional referendum in May on whether to ban gay marriage and civil unions.

"Honestly," Sherre Toler said in an interview, "I could not in good conscience remain in my post to facilitate a constitutional amendment that I believe is unconstitutional and immoral."

Toler's Jan. 3 resignation letter said the actions of the N.C. General Assembly in putting the referendum on the ballot "made it impossible for me to continue as director of elections as speaking publicly about candidates or issues appearing on the ballot is prohibited."
