I thought this was an interesting story over on the Wallet Pop blog about which items have the biggest mark ups. Now of course there does have to be some mark up because the retailer does have to make some profit to stay in business. But, according to the story, some of these items have a mark up of like 1,300 percent! Holy cow! Wine at restaurants, movie theater popcorn and pre-cut fruits and veggies at the store all made the list. Which items do you think should be added?

November 21, 2008 - 5:13pm — mrsmuddiFountain drinks! I read once that the mark up on sodas in restaurants was like 80-90%! That is ridiculous, especially if you are a paying customer buying a meal. I have boycotted buying sodas, in general, but especially eating out. Some restaurants charge as much as $2.50, even if you get free refills it doesn't cost them anywhere near that. I just had lunch at a salad bar restaurant that charged $2.25 each for me and my child!

November 21, 2008 - 8:07am — dandan14I'm surprised that retail jewelry didn't make the list.
Pretty common to see 500%-1000% markups in that industry, although companies like bluenile are changing the industry model.

November 20, 2008 - 3:10pm — ryanrt57Computer/TV/Audio cables at any retail/office store.
Best Buy is really bad... The cheapest USB A/B cable on bestbuy.com is $26. You can buy a similar cable for 94 cents (plus reasonable shipping) at monoprice.com.
HDMI also... $40 at BB vs. $4 at Monoprice.

November 20, 2008 - 3:05pm — jenncsuI think Swiffer and similar cleaning products should be added to this list. That being said, I LOVE the Clorox Toiletwand. I just can't stand having a used toilet wand proped in a corner when I can just toss that refill away when I am done.
I have resisted the baby carrots lately for the cheaper regular bag of carrots. I got a sharper vegetable peeler and doing one or two carrots for lunches or a salad doesn't take that long.
People are so busy these days, anything that cuts down on time they are willing to spend more if they have it. I overheard someone in the candy aisle the other day say they wished you could buy a bag of Hershey kisses without the wrappers. LOL!
