Improving the free credit report process...


If you've ever used the FTC's annualcreditreport.com Web site to get your free credit report (and I certainly hope you have), you may have thought the process was... well, less than simple.

Now the FTC is soliciting comments on changes it is considering making to the site. My two favorite changes are that all the "upsells" would be removed until after you receive your free credit report and that any site like freecreditreport.com (the guys with the annoying songs) would have to tell you right up front that this is not the federally mandated free credit report site.

BTW, a friend told me he saw this in the paper and you may have mentioned it before, but you can also request free credit security freezes (& thaws), which is a great tool to proactively protect your credit against identify theft:
