I heard this morning from Keri in Raleigh, who wanted to know if I had any recommendations for good hair stylists who don't charge an arm and a leg.
As I told her, I stopped doing highlights in my hair four years ago now, and since my hair is straight, I can usually get by with one of the bargain chains for a decent cut. But I figured one of you Taking Stock readers probably has a good suggestion. Remember to be specific, including why you recommend this stylist and what they charge. Also, remember to include enough information so that Keri (or anyone else) will be able to find this person and make an appointment!

Re: A good deal on haircuts...
I'm sure the experience varies widely here....so, um, YMMV....but for the last year or so, my wife (to be) has cut my hair. She was nervous the first few times, but with a guard on the clippers, it is hard to make any huge mistakes. Now she does it pretty quickly and with confidence. It saves me about $20/month, and honestly, she does much better (and much more consistent) than going to a chain shop. When we have kids, it will save even more.
Plus...there is no waiting in line, they are open late, and my hair stylist can flirt with me as much as she wants!
Maybe in about 30 years, you'll see me in a new BMW with a bumper sticker that says "Paid for with haircut money!"
