A good deal on haircuts...

I heard this morning from Keri in Raleigh, who wanted to know if I had any recommendations for good hair stylists who don't charge an arm and a leg.

As I told her, I stopped doing highlights in my hair four years ago now, and since my hair is straight, I can usually get by with one of the bargain chains for a decent cut. But I figured one of you Taking Stock readers probably has a good suggestion. Remember to be specific, including why you recommend this stylist and what they charge. Also, remember to include enough information so that Keri (or anyone else) will be able to find this person and make an appointment!

Re: A good deal on haircuts...

I'm sure the experience varies widely here....so, um, YMMV....but for the last year or so, my wife (to be) has cut my hair. She was nervous the first few times, but with a guard on the clippers, it is hard to make any huge mistakes. Now she does it pretty quickly and with confidence. It saves me about $20/month, and honestly, she does much better (and much more consistent) than going to a chain shop. When we have kids, it will save even more.
Plus...there is no waiting in line, they are open late, and my hair stylist can flirt with me as much as she wants!

Maybe in about 30 years, you'll see me in a new BMW with a bumper sticker that says "Paid for with haircut money!"

The gals at Great Clips in Poyner Place (next to Triangle Town Center) are great. I've had my hair cut/styled by several of them in the past, and they're consistently good. I like to go on weekday evenings, they usually have very little if any wait then, and they're open until 9 p.m.

Their official address is 6021 Poyner Village Parkway, Raleigh, NC 27616. Phone is 919-790-9606, although I don't make appointments in advance and just walk in.

Mitchells Academy at South hills mall is great. I have been using them for more than 10 years. Here is their website http://mitchells.edu/ClinicServicesHours/tabid/1262/Default.aspx
$5.50 for a cut
I've never spent more than $75 thats for a cut and color with foils.

Recently my favorite student graduated and I followed him to a salon. But he now charges $185 for the works-- I'm going back to the school!!

All the work is supervised by trainers so you will never leave wearing a hat or with green hair --- unless thats what you want :)
