Panel would reconsider DOT formula

A House committee moved a bill along Wednesday that would establish a commission to study how the Department of Tranportation distributes road dollars.

Transportation money is distributed according to the department's "equity formula," that was designed to spread dollars around fairly. Rep. Becky Carney, a Charlotte Democrat said the formula has created a lot of complaints across the state. Those complaints have reached the ear of leaders in both the House and the Senate.

"I feel confident we're giong to get this study comission," said Carney, a bill sponsor. A House transportation commitee spent time Wednesday tweaking who would appiont the commission's 18 members and what constituencies members would represent.

Rep. Winkie Wilkins, a Roxboro Democrat, said it wouldn't matter who was picked to study the formula

"I honestly believe if we appoint a little league baseball team to study it, they'll figure out the thing's a mess," Wilkins said.
