Andy Griffith participated in both of Gov. Mike Easley's inaugurations.
In 2001, he delivered the state toast to wrap up the midday ceremony. A Jan. 7 story in the N&O noted the reception:
Andy Griffith, North Carolina's favorite son, read the state toast after the swearing-in - and received the largest cheer of the day. ... "Go Andy!" one guest hollered as the white-haired actor, looking a little frail and wearing dark glasses to guard against the low January sun, shuffled to the rostrum.
In 2005, he read a poem, "The Bridge Builder," by Will Allen Dromgoole, a popular inspirationatl piece about the importance of helping future generations.
In an introduction, then-House Co-Speaker Jim Black joked that Griffith was 'the real star of today," according to a Jan. 16 story in the Greensboro News & Record.
"Governor," Black added, "you do come in a close second."
