Money back for ditching plastic...

In today's USA Today there's a story about Target and CVS joining the ranks of retailers who offer you a financial incentive to use a reusable bag instead of taking a plastic one.

According to the story, Target will start offering a 5-cent credit for bringing your own bag, and CVS will give you a $1 Extra Buck credit for every fourth time you bring your own.

That's great, and of course adds onto what other retailers including Trader Joe's, Whole Foods and Lowes Foods have been doing for some time. Know of others that give you a credit for bringing your own bag? Feel free to share.

Lowes new rewards program...

As I wrote last week, Lowes Foods has announced that it will discontinue its participation in the Greenpoints program. Now we know what will replace it.

The new program is called Fresh Rewards. There are three ways you can save with the program. First, there will be promotional Fresh Rewards discounts on specific items that will be advertised in the Lowes weekly flier. Second, there will be e-mail offers tailored to your needs based on preferences you set when you sign up. And third, people who spend an average of $50 per week in the previous quarter will receive additional $5 off your next order coupon. But even if you do not spend $50 a week, you can still get the e-mail offers and discounts from the flier.

Spokeswoman Lisa Selip said customers should see new kiosks in stores where they can obtain a new Fresh Rewards loyalty card. Once you have one, you can go to the Fresh Rewards Web site and register your card.

You do have to apply and show both your state-issued ID (like a driver's license) and your state-issued unemployment benefits enrollment confirmation to participate. You can find out more and register online using this link. (Thanks to reader Jennifer for the tip!)

The 30-second spot features Hansbrough (and his AT&T phone) playing a pivotal role in locating a girl's missing dog. Reportedly, it was shot in Chapel Hill. You can check the YouTube video out below...
