Martin joins consulting firm

Former Gov. Jim Martin will join McGuireWoods Consulting in Charlotte, firm officials announced Tuesday.

Martin will start work Monday as a senior advisor at the company, a subsidiary of the McGuireWoods law firm, joining its growing government affairs and economic development team. reports Kirsten Valle of The Charlotte Observer.

He will be based in Charlotte but will also work with clients from offices in Raleigh, Wilmington and Washington, D.C., officials said.

Martin, who served as governor from 1985 to 1993, most recently worked as a corporate vice president of Carolinas HealthCare System in Charlotte, heading its research and federal relations efforts.

McGuireWoods Consulting was formed in 1998. It has more than 40 consultants in nine offices worldwide.

McGuire Woods to host reception

McGuireWoods will host a legislative reception June 11.

The lobbying and public affairs firm will hold the Sizzling Summer Legislative Reception at Yancy's Restaurant on Fayetteville Street in downtown Raleigh from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

"Authentic Cajun-Creole fare" will be served at the reception, which will support the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.

Monetary and canned food donations will be accepted.

Earlier this year, the Richmond-based firm merged with Helms Mullis and Wicker's Raleigh office, led by former lieutenant governor Dennis Wicker, though Wicker went to another firm.

Invitations for the event say it is the "first annual" — a misnomer that occasionally irks grammar types
