Linda Sebastian met Jesse Helms at a school concert.

The Raleigh elementary schoolteacher, 56, said she sat in front of the former senator at a Broughton High production in which her daughters and his granddaughters starred. 

"He was so kind and so gracious," she recalled.

But she said her brother, Republican gubernatorial nominee Pat McCrory has an even better story.

As Sebastian tells it, McCrory was a young City Council member eager to hear Helms speak at an event in Charlotte in the early 1990s. 

He snuck in a side door, looking for a place to sit. Helms saw him and offered his own seat.

"Pat was so impressed that he did that," she said.

Sebastian said she did not always agree with Helms' politics, but she thinks politicians of all stripes can benefit from following his example of helping constituents, being true to their principles and staying honest.
