Pricey school lunches

The price of some fruits and vegetables in school lunches has doubled since the U.S. Department of Defense outsourced the work.

Produce distributor Foster-Caviness Foodservice of Colfax has added a $4.30 surcharge on each case. That's in addition to a 5.9 percent charge Defense Department purchasing agents have already added.

The program subsidizes the purchase of home-grown produce by more than 60 North Carolina school districts, including Wake, Johnston and Chatham. (N&O

Mule Days

Elizabeth Edwards put in a good word for Johnston County.

During a guest appearance on "Wait Wait ... Don't Tell Me!" on NPR Sunday, Edwards was quizzed about alcohol treatment centers for the rich and famous.

After she missed a question about equine therapy at Malibu's Promises, conservative panelist P.J. O'Rourke chimed in:

"I've actually ridden a horse drunk," he said. "It's just one of those Republican things that you do."

Edwards said that wasn't surprising. She then invited O'Rourke to Mule Days in Benson.

"You're not getting me on one of those sober," he said.
