Gov. Beverly Perdue dropped in at the Krispy Kreme on Peace Street in Raleigh Tuesday to pack up the doughnuts with Carolina blue icing to send to Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm.
Perdue and Granholm wagered on last night's NCAA championship game that the loser would be photographed wearing the victor's team regalia and consuming native cuisine from the opposing state. At the Krispy Kreme, Perdue packed up the last five of 17 doughnuts (the point spread), a jersey (No. 42 - no current player, but Sean May from 2005 championship team) and a baseball cap.
Perdue, who attended the game, penned a quick note, saying she hoped that Granholm, recently ill with the flu, was feeling better and thanking her for the Detroit hospitality.
"Roses are red. Tarheels are blue," Perdue wrote. "Victory is sweet, and Krispy Kremes are, too."
Moments before Perdue's visit, Michigan native Andy Antekeier, now a Floridian but visiting grandchildren in Raleigh, showed up wearing a Michigan State sweatshirt. He was buying doughnuts to pay off a bet with his brother-in-law who lives in town.
The governors of North Carolina and Michigan have made a wager involving tonight's NCAA men's basketball championship — involving food and outfits.
North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue said she had accepted a wager from Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, Rob Christensen reports.
The governor from the losing team's state must be photographed wearing the winning team’s jersey and hat while dining on local food from that team's state. The governor of the losing team's state must also contribute $100 to a food bank in the winning team's state.
"Gov. Granholm and I have several things in common — we're both Democrats, and we have each served as our state's first female governor and, as far as I can tell, we both look good in Carolina blue," Perdue said in a statement. "I look forward to seeing Gov. Granholm donning a Tar Heel jersey and hat."
Granholm thanked the Michigan State Spartans "for giving us hope and for uplifting our entire state."
Could Ty Harrell represent us in the Great White North?
A Canadian magazine thinks so.
In its Dec. 17 issue, Embassy magazine included state Rep. Ty Harrell on a list of possible ambassadors to Canada, once "one of the most sought-after positions in American foreign service" but now maybe not-so-much.
"There is nobody clamouring for the job, and that silence is incredibly interesting," Canada expert Christopher Sands told the magazine.
Here's what it had to say about Harrell, a Raleigh Democrat:
Democratic state representative from the important swing state of North Carolina. This rising star endorsed Mr. Obama while John Edwards was still in the primaries. Wife is Canadian.
The magazine also included Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, former Rep. David Bonior, outgoing Democratic Party chairman Howard Dean and Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire, among others.
