Boyle and trouble

Jim Black will be sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Terrence W. Boyle.

The former House speaker had argued that Judge James C. Dever III was biased because he had previously helped file a lawsuit against Black and others.

After Dever stepped aside, a new judge was randomly chosen.

According to a breaking news story in the Charlotte Observer, Boyle will take the case.

A Reagan appointee, he once worked for U.S. Sen. Jesse Helms. Senate Democrats recently blocked his nomination to the U.S. 4th Circuit Court of Appeals after objections from civil rights groups.

Black is a Democrat from Mecklenburg County.
