The giveaway is part of a promotion of the new Guns N Roses album, Chinese Democracy. Now I am definitely not a Guns N Roses expert, but from what I can gather, this album has been a LOOONG time in coming. And since the release is on the 23rd and Dr. Pepper touts its 23 flavors, a promotional partnership was born. You will be able to request your free coupon on the Dr. Pepper Web site starting 12:01 a.m. on Nov. 23. Like I said, I'll post a reminder...

Thanks to the stolen base in last night's World Series game between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Tampa Bay Rays, Taco Bell will be giving away free tacos on Tuesday, Oct. 28. From 2 to 6 p.m., you can visit any Taco Bell store to receive a free crunchy taco. It's part of the company's Steal a Base Steal a Taco promotion.

Progress Energy is giving away 1,000 free CFL lightbulbs each day of the State Fair. To get one, visit the Progress Energy exhibit in the Green NC Pavilion near Gate 11. Visitors can take part in an interactive demonstration about CFL bulbs and will be asked to sign Progress' pledge to commit to replacing at least one incandescent bulb with a CFL bulb. The free bulbs will go to the first 1,000 people each day.

Today is the final Sunday that Cameron Village will be giving away free ice cream. Customers are asked to bring the coupon from the N&O or the Cameron Village Web site to either the Baskin-Robbins shop in Cameron Village or the special "Cone Cafe" set up on Clark Avenue near the Party Shop and Accipiter. (If it rains, the Cone Cafe plans will be scrapped, and scoops will be available only at Baskin-Robbins.) The promotion runs from 1 to 5 p.m., but I'd get there early to make sure you don't miss out...

If you're looking for something to do tomorrow, here's a really good one (thanks to reader Jennifer for alerting me).

Tomorrow (Saturday) is Museum Day 2008, an event sponsored by Smithshonian Magazine to encourage people to visit museums. If you go to this Web site and print the Museum Day admission card, it entitles you to free general admission for you and a guest at a number of museums nationwide. There is a limit of one per household. Locally, only the Duke Homestead State Historic Site in Durham and the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh are participating, but there are more than 20 facilities participating throughout the state, and dozens more in other parts of the country.

Spread the word...

Perhaps surprisingly, I'm not one of those people who will wait in line overnight for a giveaway. It would have to be a pretty fantastic giveaway...

But, if this sort of thing appeals to you, there's a great opportunity on Saturday. The new Buffalo Wild Wings in Knightdale is opening Saturday and will give free wings for a year to the first 100 people in line. (You actually get 52 vouchers for six free wings – one order for every week of the year.) Marketing manager Randy Groover said it's not uncommon for people to start lining up the night before the giveaway, so if you're serious, I'd suggest getting there early. The store is at 700 Knightdale Blvd. and is supposed to open its doors at 10 a.m.
