A father's take on Obama's speech

Ed Edmundson liked both the military and foreign policy parts of the speech.

The New Bern resident came to President Obama's speech at Camp Lejeune today with his son, Eric, an Army sergeant who suffered brain damage in 2005 after an IED attack in Iraq and a subsequent heart attack.

"We thought the president said some great things," said Ed Edmundson, a former Con-Agra supervisor who retired to take care of his son.

He appreciated Obama's pledges both to provide more care for wounded veterans and to remove combat troops from Iraq next year.

"We feel we have a president that has a plan and a mission and he's sticking to it," he said.

Edmundson, an independent, said he was glad to know the Iraq war may have an end date.

"We just don't want to see any more families and young service members having to go through what Eric's gone through," he said.
