Stuart Campbell, executive director of Equality North Carolina, is leaving the organization.
In an email to supporters, Campbell said he is stepping down this summer, but did not say what he will do next.
Campbell has led the gay-rights group for less than two years. He was hired to replace long-time executive director Ian Palmquist in October 2011, as the group was preparing to fight a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage and civil unions.
The amendment passed overwhelmingly, 61 percent to 29 percent.
Correction: Amendment passed 61 percent to 39 percent.
