Tweets and Facebook posts by and about North Carolina politicos will now stand as an official part of the public record in the State Archives of North Carolina.
A beta version of a project bringing social media into the archives was unveiled Tuesday after the state worked with a Durham company called ArchiveSocial to figure out how to best aggregate what people are saying about government online, according to WRAL's Tech Wire.
Kelly Eubank, head of the electronic records for the state archives, believes that social media belongs in the public record and had been an outspoken leader on that front long before the agreement with ArchiveSocial and the launching of the first site.
"For the first time ever, we can capture the full context of social media as it happens and make the records almost instantly available to the general public," said Eubank.
The state signed a two-year deal at an undisclosed cost to launch the program, and the intitial launch includes more than 55,000 records, Tech Wire reports.
