Senate passes bill to nix Dix lease

The state Senate voted to revoke Raleigh’s lease on the Dorothea Dix property Tuesday by a 29-21 vote, with Wake County’s Republicans voting with Democrats against the measure.

The bill now moves to the House, where several Republicans have sponsored an identical bill.

Sen. Neal Hunt, a Raleigh Republican, voted against the bill, as did the two other Wake County senators, Republican Chad Barefoot and Democrat Dan Blue. "It really was a difficult decision but I have been a proponent of the 300-acre Dix park for years," Hunt said. "I just think for wake county it's such a valuable resource, despite that it's way below market value, I still decided to vote" against the measure. Full story.

Sen. Hunt will co-chair budget committee

The Triangle will have a state senator on one of the most important committees in the General Assembly next session. Sen. Neal Hunt, a four-term Republican from Raleigh, will be one of three co-chairmen of the Senate Committee on Appropriations/Base Budget.

Raleigh's former mayor criticizes Sen. Hunt for 'false' mailers

A state Republican Party attack on Raleigh's parks and greenway system drew former Mayor Charles Meeker back into the political fray on Tuesday.

Meeker called a news conference at his downtown Raleigh law office to refute a pair of GOP mailers that criticize Democrat Sig Hutchinson, who is running against Sen. Neal Hunt in suburban Raleigh's District 15.

The ads are false or misleading on several fronts, Meeker said.

Sen. Hunt uses state account to endorse Newby

State Sen. Neal Hunt emailed constituents a legislative newsletter on Wednesday asking them to re-elect N.C. Supreme Court Justice Paul Newby. But the Raleigh Republican used his state email account to do it, and that’s not allowed.

The Legislative Ethics Committee issued guidance in 2007 advising legislators they cannot use state resources for campaign activities, which includes “urging people to vote for or against a particular candidate.”

It was an oversight, the four-term senator said in an email to Dome. “I have always previously sent political emails from my personal email address but the reference to Justice Newby in my legislative newsletter just slipped by me.”

Republican mail piece takes shot at Gov. Perdue

Republican State Sen. Neal Hunt is courting District 15 voters with a mailer touting his ties to Wake County, his private sector success and his readiness to "clean up the mess caused by Gov. Perdue's failed leadership."

Hunt, seeking his fifth term to his Raleigh district, used familiar lines from state and national campaigns this election cycle: he'll help balance the budget, end wasteful spending and improve schools, the mailer says. (See mailer in link below.)
