Foxx: NC will be site of one of nation's hottest Senate race

Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx says North Carolina Democrats are preparing for a major battle in defending Sen. Kay Hagan's seat in 2014.

“It's gonna be one of the biggest Senate race in the country,” Foxx told POLITICO this weekend while in Washington to attend the inaugural. “And that's going to be a fight.''

North Carolina Democrats took a drubbing on election day.

“I think it's incumbent on North Carolina Democrats to do what national Republicans are doing, which is to huddle up and figure out what happened and to think about what the implications are and what happened and to think about what the implications are and what needs to happen going forward to build a case for progressive politics in North Carolina.''

Anthony Foxx recites personal story in DNC speech

Speaking Tuesday night to a worldwide audience about the hometown that he says changed his life, Mayor Anthony Foxx told his personal narrative in a speech that will boost his profile for a future bid for higher office.

The Democratic mayor welcomed the national party convention to Charlotte, a place “where Americans have come together ... and made great things possible.”

Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx has opened the door to a possible run for governor, hours after Gov. Bev Perdue, a fellow Democrat, announced she wouldn't run.

"I remain focused on Charlotte and the substantial work ahead," Foxx said in a statement this afternoon. "I will spend the coming weeks talking with my family and friends about how I could best serve our city and state, and I ask the public and media for some patience as I work through those conversations."

Foxx could not be reached today.

He's one of several Democrats whose names have surfaced as possible Democratic candidates.

Foxx's predecessor, former Mayor Pat McCrory, plans to announce for the Republican nomination on Tuesday.

Obama campaign officially opens Charlotte office

Qcitymetro, an online publication in Charlotte, has the scoop on the official opening of an Obama campaign office in the Queen City: The Obama re-election campaign opened its Charlotte headquarters Thursday with a call for volunteers and a promise to once again put North Carolina in the president’s win column.

Hundreds jammed the one-story building on Elizabeth Avenue between Presbyterian Hospital and Central Piedmont Community College. Mayor Anthony Foxx reminded the cheering crowd that the same building had housed each of his two successful campaigns for mayor: “Let’s keep the steak unbroken,” he said.
