George Holding: I need $500,000 to beat back Charles Malone

For most political observers, former U.S. Attorney George Holding has a clear path to Congress.

He has the Republican nomination for the newly reconfigured 13th district which is a bullet-proof GOP district. And he running against a little known, underfinanced Democrat named Charles Malone.

House Speaker John Boehner on Saturday referred to Holding as the next congressman. But you would never know that from Holding's fund raising appeal. Holding plans to hold a fund raiser on Oct. 23 at the home and Jane and Ricky Wright of Wake Forest.

Malone fundraiser Sunday

Charles Malone, the Democratic candidate for the 13th congressional district, will host a fundraiser from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Sunday in the Green Room of the Hibernian Pub in the Glenwood South neighborhood of Raleigh.

Congressman David Price will attend and make remarks.

Malone, who lives in Raleigh, will also be campaigning on Thursday in Nashville. No details of that event were provided.

Malone is running against former U.S. Attorney George Holding.

In new campaign ad, George Holding shares a fireside chat

Republican George Holding is a clear favorite for the 13th Congressional District. So instead of telling his story in a new radio ad, Holding spends a minute telling Thomas Edison's story.

The tie in for Holding's FDR-styled fireside chat: "America was built was by people like Thomas Edison. And that spirit -- not the government -- will rebuild our economy."

Malone would break party ranks on Bush tax cuts

Charles Malone, who is running against George Holding for Congress, says he would extend President Bush’s tax cuts to include those who make $1 million or less – higher than the $250,000 limit Democratic leaders in Congress and President Obama propose.

“I am supporting this extension beyond what my party is asking in order to give tax relief to approximately 620,000 small businesses that would be affected by the $1 million limit,” Malone said in a press release on Friday.

Malone, who lives in Raleigh, said he called for the tax cuts in a speech Thursday to the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce. He said it was meant to illustrate he is willing to bridge the divide between parties if he is elected in November.

The 13th Congressional District includes portions of Wake, Durham, Granville, Vance, Franklin, Nash, Edgecombe, Wilson, and Wayne counties. Holding is a former U.S. Attorney; he defeated Wake County Board of Commission member Paul Coble in the primary.

George Holding won't talk about Edwards case he once prosecuted

A significant piece of Republican George Holding's campaign biography is his role as a U.S. attorney prosecuting the case against John Edwards. The Raleigh congressional candidate left his role before the case went to trial -- but what does he think about the case given Thursday's verdict?

Holding's not talking.

His campaign strategist, Carter Wrenn, said Holding wouldn't comment about the case. "I don't think it's quite appropriate," Wrenn said Friday, referring questions to the current federal prosecutors.

But Holding's campaign did defend the cost of the prosecution in the May primary race. His GOP opponent Paul Coble called the Edwards prosecution political.

Malone makes it official: He's running against Holding

Democratic nominee for the 13th Congressional District Charles Malone makes it official: He's back in the race. Malone signed up to run in the primary but dropped out because of health concerns. When those concerns resolved, and he was the top vote-getter in the Democratic primary, Malone re-evaluated.

He will face Republican nomineee George Holding, the former U.S. attorney for this part of North Carolina, who received heavy financial backing from a super PAC comprised of his banking family relatives and some friends.

Holding defeated Paul Coble and Bill Randall in the primary. "Following ia time for reflection, prayer and physical healing, I am fit and prepared to make sure that the 45,000 people who voted for me on May 8 did not vote in vain," Malone said in a statement he released.

Democratic opposition to Holding remains unclear

So, will it really be a slam-dunk for George Holding in the November general election contest for the 13th Congressional District? Holding won handily last night, and the redrawn district is strongly Republican.

Plus, there was no strong Democratic opponent. The man who got the most votes, Charles Malone, had said he was dropping out of the race due to health problems.

But in the light of the day after, Malone isn’t so sure what’s going to happen. He’s feeling better after a scare involving his heart (not a heart attack) and concern over a family history of heart problems.

Wake GOP senator has challenger

Charles Malone, a 62-year old state employee active in Democratic politics, has announced that his plans to challenge Republican state Sen. Neal Hunt of Raleigh.

Malone, who has been campaigning for months, said he will stress kitchen-table issues, such as reducing unemployment, small business failures, bankruptcies, and home foreclosures, Rob Christensen reports.

He said he would work across party lines. “We need a person who will bring a new perspective to the N.C. Senate by putting people before political party loyalty,” Malone said.

Malone is the equal opportunity director in the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. He has worked in several businesses and campaigns. Although regarded as a swing district, Senate district 15, which includes parts of North Raleigh and Wake Forest, has long been in Republican hands.

Neal, a real estate manager and former Raleigh City council member, has represented the district since 2004, when he defeated Republican incumbent John Carrington in a primary.
