Jill Biden cancels N.C. visit due to storm

Jill Biden, the vice president's wife, and Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden were supposed to make appearances in Asheville and Huntersville on Sunday but the plans were canceled Saturday night due to Hurricane Sandy.

A statement from the presidential campaign said the cancellations were so local law enforcement and emergency management resources could be focused on the disaster recovery.

Beau Biden takes shot at Mitt Romney, hits Gov. Bev Perdue

Beau Biden, the son of the Democratic vice president, went "off script," as he called it, to fire a shot a Republican Mitt Romney but hit Gov. Bev Perdue at the same time.

At the N.C. Democratic Party's annual fundraising dinner, Biden mentioned that Romney didn't seek a second term as Massachusetts governor, suggesting his failed economic policies hurt him. "I've never met a successful politician who didn't run again," said Biden, the Delaware attorney general.

The crowd collectively groaned. Biden's line sounded similar to what Republicans say about another governor who isn't seeking re-election: North Carolina Democrat Bev Perdue.

Ouch.

Beau Biden compares Romney economics to George W. Bush's policies

Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden called North Carolina a "critical" state in the presidential election and defined the "stark contrast from the top of the ticket down."

"President Obama has a very clearly articulated path with the creation of 4.2 million jobs, 27 months of consecutive job growth," Biden told reporters for his keynote speech at the N.C. Democratic Party convention Saturday. "If you compare this to Mitt Romney, the only answer I have as to his economic (plan) is a return to George W. Bush."

Obama's policies, economists say, are not entirely responsible for the job growth and Republicans rap the president for being out of touch with the economy after he suggest the "private sector is doing fine" compared to public sector job growth.

Sen. Ted Kaufman, D-Duke

Duke University is losing one senator, but gaining a new one.

North Carolina Sen. Elizabeth Dole, a Duke graduate, lost her re-election bid earlier this month.

But on Monday, Edward E. "Ted" Kaufman, another Dookie, was named to the Senate seat in Delaware held by Vice President-elect Joe Biden, Rob Christensen reports.

Kaufman not only graduated from Duke, but since 1991 he has been a senior lecturing fellow at Duke law school while also teaching in the Fuqua School of Business and the Sanford Institute of Public Policy.

Kaufman, 69, has been Biden's chief of staff for 19 years. Kaufman said he would only serve until 2010, leaving open the possibility that Biden’s son, Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden, would run then.

Kaufman once lived in Raleigh years ago, when he worked for Dupont.
