Roy Carter is a candidate for the Democratic nomination for the Fifth District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Early Life and Education
Roy Carter was born Dec. 2, 1943, in Mars Hill, N.C., to Solomon M. and Jessie Carter. His father was a dairy, cattle and tobacco farmer; his mother worked in an electronics plant.
He went to Mars Hill High School, graduating in 1962.
He then went to East Tennesse State University, graduating with a degree in health and physical education.
Professional Career
After college, he began teaching and coaching around the Asheville area in Buncombe County schools.
In 1972, he moved to Hendersonville, working for 19 years as a high-school science teacher and football coach.
In 1999, he moved to Ashe County. He now works as a football coach and vocational agriculture teacher at North Wilkes High School.
Political Career
In 1978, he unsuccessfully ran for Henderson County Sheriff.
Over the years, he's volunteered for Democratic candidates, including Bo Thomas' two Congressional runs in the 11th District.
On Labor Day of 2007, he announced he would run for the Fifth Congressional seat currently held by U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx.
He said his campaign would focus on improving education and ending the Iraq war.
He beat Diane Hamby in the Democratic primary with 50.3 percent of the vote in May.
