Synopsis | Joe McLaughlin is an Onslow County Commissioner and a former candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives. The son of a Coast Guard officer, McLaughlin grew up in ports along the East Coast. He attended the U.S. Air Force Academy, then joined the infantry. After serving at Fort Bragg as well as in Georgia, California and Washington, D.C., he retired and became a financial advisor in Jacksonville. In his second term as an Onslow County commissioner, he announced a run against U.S. Rep. Walter Jones in the Republican primary. He resigned from the county board on Feb. 1, but lost to Jones in the May primary. |

Joe McLaughlin is an Onslow County Commissioner and a former candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives.
Early Life and Education
Joseph R. McLaughlin was born Sept. 16, 1954, in Wilmington, Del. His father was in the U.S. Coast Guard.
The youngest of five children, McLaughlin grew up in various East Coast ports where his father served.
He graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1976 and the U.S. Army Ranger School.
He earned a master's of science from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., in 1986.
Family
McLaughlin married Sherrill Ann Baucom of Charlotte. She works as a registered nurse at Onslow Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville.
They have three children, Matt, Colleen and Caitlin.
Military Service
Because of a vision impairment, McLaughlin could not pilot a plane, so he volunteered for the U.S. Army as an infantry officer.
He served as a platoon leader in the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg as well in units in Georgia, California, and Washington, D.C., as well as in Korea.
He earned three oak clusters and the master parachutist badge. He retired as a major.
Political Career
McLaughlin served two terms on the Onslow County board of commissioners.
In May, he announced he would seek the Republican nomination for the U.S. House seat currently held by Rep. Walter Jones.
His campaign focused on support for the war in Iraq, which Jones opposes.
On Feb. 1, he resigned from the board of commissioners to spend more time campaigning.
He lost to Jones in the May primary.
