Grier Martin is a Democratic state representative from Raleigh.
Early Life and Education
Grier Martin was born on Oct. 21, 1968, in Charlotte to D.G. and Harriet Martin.
His father was an attorney who was vice president of the University of North Carolina system and a one-time Congressional candidate. His mother was a housewife.
He graduated from West Charlotte High School in 1987.
He went to Davidson College, graduating with a bachelor's in history in 1991.
He then went to UNC-Chapel Hill, earning a law degree in 1995.
Military Service
In 1991, Martin signed up as an officer in the U.S. Army Reserve as part of the ROTC program he studied under in college.
He then moved to Fort Sill, Okla., to study field artillery for five months. He remained a reservist as he finished law school.
In 2002, he was called to active duty, serving two years with the XVIII Airborne Corps in Afghanistan and at Fort Bragg.
In 2004, he graduated from Judge Advocate General's School in Charlottesville, Va.
He is still on so-called "jump status" with the Army Reserve.
Professional Career
After graduating from UNC, Martin moved to Charlotte to work for Horack Talley Pharr & Lowndes law firm, focusing on real estate law. He worked there for three years.
In 1999, he went to work for Preservation North Carolina, serving as legal counsel and engaging in historic preservation work. He worked there until he was called back to active duty.
Since 2004, he has been a self-employed attorney.
Political Career
Over the years, he's volunteered for various Democrats, including Harvey Gantt, local Charlotte candidates and his father's campaigns in 1984, 1986 and 1998.
In 2004, Martin was elected to the state House of Representatives in the 34th District, representing central and North Raleigh. He beat incumbent one-term Republican Rep. Don Munford.
In 2006, he was re-elected.
In 2007, Martin briefly considered running for the Democratic nomination to face U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole.
