Synopsis | The son of a switchboard operator and a cleaning service worker, Folwell earned degrees in accounting and became a financial consultant. After an unsuccessful run for Winston-Salem City Council, he was appointed to the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Board of Education in 1994, where he served until 2000. In 2002, he ran unsuccessfully for state House. In 2004, he was elected to the state House, and he's been re-elected once. Dale Folwell is a state representative from Winston-Salem and a former member of the Winston-Salem Forsyth County school board.
Early Life and Education
Dale Robbins Folwell was born Dec. 17, 1958, in Raleigh. His mother was a switchboard operator and his father worked for a cleaning service.
He grew up in Winston-Salem, graduated from West Forsyth High School in 1977.
He then worked for a few years as a garbage collector and a motorcycle mechanic.
He then went to UNC-Greensboro, graduating in 1985 with a bachelor of science in accounting and in 1986 with a master's degree in accountancy.
Professional Career
In 1985, he passed all four parts of the CPA exam on his first try.
After graduation, he worked for Merrill Lynch in Winston-Salem as a financial consultant for five years.
In 1990, he moved to Alex, Brown & Sons investment banking firm as an investment manager. He worked there eight years.
Since 1998, he's been self-employed as a private investor, managing his own money and consulting with portfolio managers.
Political Career
In 1989, he graduated from the Institute of Political Leadership. He then ran for Winston-Salem City Council, losing by 75 votes.
In 1992, he was appointed to the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Board of Education. He was re-elected in 1994 and 1998, serving until 2000.
In 2002, he ran for state House, losing to Rep. Bill McGee in the Republican primary.
In 2004, he ran for state House, winning a seven-way primary and the general election. In 2005, he was elected Republican House and Senate joint caucus leader.
In office, he has sponsored bills on education, identity theft and organ donation. He received an award from the N.C. Association of County Commissioners for a 2005 bill that requires property taxes be paid before a vehicle can be registered.
In the summer of 2007, he announced he would run for state treasurer, but he dropped out in mid-February after rival Rep. Bill Daughtridge outraised him.
