Bob Crumley is a candidate for the Republican nomination for state attorney general.
Early Life and Education
Bobby James Crumley was born on Dec. 28, 1956, to Bobby Harold Crumley and Jane Murray Crumley. His father was a supervisor at Piedmont Airlines, later U.S. Air, and his mother was a registered nurse.
He graduated from South Stokes High School in 1974.
He studied at Appalachian State University, graduating with honors in 1977 with a degree in political science.
He then went to Wake Forest University on an academic scholarship, earning a law degree in 1980.
Professional Career
After college, he worked as in-house counsel First American Savings and Loan in Asheboro for a couple years, then served as county manager and county attorney in Randolph County.
In the mid 1980s, he started a short-lived business, New Birth Industries, which sold NASCAR merchandise at retail stores. Afterward, he went to work for Stedman Corp., a textile company, as director of personnel services.
He then worked for Employee Benefit Protective Services, a spin-off of Stedman.
In 1987, he started working for the Joe D. Floyd law firm in High Point.
In 1989, he started Crumley & Associates law firm in Greensboro, which focuses on automobile accidents, workers compensation and Social Security cases. The firm now has 10 offices from Hickory to Burlington.
In television ads for his law firm, Crumley's tagline is "Better call Bob!"
In the early 1990s, he began investing in commercial real estate, handling office buildings and small shopping centers.
In 2005, he and his brother Mitch started Mitchell James LLC, a firm that specializes in restoration of environmentally damaged streams and housing development. They also run Carolina Bio-Grid, which handles green-waste recycling.
He currently serves on the N.C. School of Government Foundation at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Political Career
Crumley has been active in Republican politics since college.
In 1977 at the age of 19, he became the youngest Republican Party county chairman in the United States. That year, he met his wife, Teresa, at a young Republican dance in Charlotte.
As a volunteer he worked on Dave Flaherty's campaign for governor in 1976. He and his wife were camp counselors at the Youth for Helms summer camp in 1978. He held a fundraiser for Rep. Art Pope's run for lieutenant governor.
He ran unsuccessfully for state Senate from Randolph County in 2002, losing a four-way primary to now Sen. Jerry Tillman.
He announced in 2005 that he would seek the Republican nomination for attorney general.
