Bill Daughtridge is a state representative and a candidate for the Republican nomination for state treasurer.
Early Life and Education
He was born Dec. 19, 1952, in Rocky Mount to Bill and Carol Daughtridge. His father was in the petroleum business and his mother was a homemaker.
He graduated from Rocky Mount Senior High in 1971, as a Morehead Scholar, the most prestigious scholarship in North Carolina at the time.
He then went to UNC-Chapel Hill, earning a bachelor of science in business administration in 1975.
While in school, he was chairman of the UNC Election Board, which ran student body elections, and received the outstanding senior award.
He then received a Business Foundation scholarship to attend graduate business school at UNC.
At the business school, he was vice president of finance at the MBA student association, and he served on the finance committee for UNC Graduate and Professional Federation, a student assocation.
He earned a master's of business administration in 1977.
In 2002, he graduated from the Institute of Political Leadership.
Military Service
He served in the National Guard from 1971 to 1977, leaving with a rank of Specialist Sixth Class.
Professional Career
After graduation, he went to work as a financial analyst for Continental Oil Co. in Houston, Texas, for two years.
In 1979, he returned to Rocky Mount to work as a manager of Daughtridge Gas Co., which was started by his grandfather.
In 1983, he became president of the various Daughtridge companies after his father died.
Since then, he has bought other oil companies in the region, including Moore King Sullivan of Greenville. He also started a convenience store chain called The Fuel Doc and a propane cylinder company called Exchange Express.
In 2007, he became a franchisee for Dunkin Donuts. He also owns car washes, inspection stations and oil-change stations.
Political Career
In 1987, he was appointed by to the Oil and Gas Inspection Board by Gov. Jim Martin.
In 1997, he was appointed to the N.C. Board of Travel and Tourism by a representative of the petroleum industry. He served until 2002.
In 2002, he won a seat in the state House of Representatives in the 25th District. He's been re-elected in 2004 and 2006.
He was chairman of the Joint Select Committee on Economic Growth and Development in 2005, helping pass bills that rewrote the Bill Lee Act and the Job Development Investment Grant program.
In 2005, he was appointed to the N.C. Economic Development Board. He currently serves on the executive committee.
2008 Campaign
In 2007, he announced he would run for the Republican nomination for state treasurer. Fellow state Rep. Dale Folwell also planned to run for the nomination, but he dropped out in mid-February after Daughtridge outraised him.
Daughtridge's campaign is focusing on maintaining the state's AAA bond rating, securing the state employees' retirement fund and improving the state employees' health insurance fund.
He has been endorsed by U.S. Sen. Richard Burr, Labor Commissioner Cherie Berry, Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler and state Auditor Les Merritt.
